Motel One Köln-Messe Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Motel One Köln-Messe, you immediately get that this isn’t your typical budget chain hotel. The lobby has this sleek, modern design that feels more boutique than motel — honestly, the name is a bit misleading. Located right in the Deutz district, this three-star property sits practically next door to the Koelnmesse exhibition center, which explains why you’ll often spot business travelers wheeling their luggage through the stylish entrance.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about staying in Deutz — you’re technically across the Rhine from Cologne’s old town, but it’s actually perfect for exploring. The Deutz train station is literally a five-minute walk away, and from there you can hop on the S-Bahn or regional trains to get anywhere in the city. Plus, couples seem to absolutely adore this spot (they’ve rated the location 9.2, which is pretty impressive). You know what’s great? You can walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge to reach the cathedral and main shopping areas, and the evening stroll back offers some of the best views of the city skyline.
The Room Experience
The room design follows Motel One’s signature style — clean lines, that distinctive turquoise accent wall, and everything you actually need without unnecessary frills. I mean, don’t expect a massive space, but the layout is surprisingly smart. The bed is genuinely comfortable (which matters more than you’d think after a long day of trade shows or sightseeing), and the bathroom, while compact, has a great rain shower. The windows are well-insulated too, so you won’t hear much from the street below.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast setup here actually impressed me — they’ve got a proper buffet with vegetarian and vegan options, which isn’t always a given at this price point. The restaurant area gets busy during trade fair periods, so I’d suggest heading down early if you’re staying during a major event at the Messe. The coffee is decent (important for those early morning exhibition starts), and they usually have fresh bread and local cold cuts that give you a proper German breakfast experience. The dining space is thoughtfully designed for both quick bites and leisurely meals.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it balances being business-friendly without feeling sterile for leisure travelers. The staff genuinely knows the area well — they’ll point you toward the best local spots and help with directions that actually make sense. Parking is available if you’re driving, though honestly, with the train connections here, you might not need a car at all. The whole experience feels more upscale than the price suggests, and that location rating of 9.2 isn’t just numbers — it really is one of those spots where everything works perfectly for both business and leisure guests.
Early hotels booking in Cologne requires advance planning during peak cultural seasons when visitors flock to see the city’s world-famous cathedral and attend major festivals.

We had a room overlooking the inner courtyard, which was nice. Big bed and all clean. We didn't go, but the bar area looked inviting.
It was easy to get into the city centre on foot.
What could be improved: Like other travellers, I'd say a kettle would be nice!
I'm not a fan of carpets either. But neither of things detracted from a restful stay.Exceptional – Was from Germany – July 6, 2025 (10/10)
Nice location, nice stuff and nice facilities.
Wonderful – Zvezdelina from United Kingdom – July 5, 2025 (9/10)
The room (bathroom included) was very comfortable, clean, and modern (the pillows were great!). It had all the necessary amenities I needed for my short stay. The staff was friendly and helpful. The location was super convenient—right next to Messe/Deutz station (about a 2-minute walk), very close to the Lanxess Arena (about 10 minutes) and a very pleasant walk to the city centre (about 20 minutes).
What could be improved: The windows couldn't be opened.Exceeded my expectations. Staff excellent – Jeff from United Kingdom – July 2, 2025 (10/10)
Great location. Room was really nice and bed was very comfortable. Staff were excellent. Impressive features inside.
