You know what caught me off guard about the Leonardo Hotel Köln? It’s tucked away in Buchforst – honestly, I had to look that district up before my first visit – but it’s actually this quiet pocket that feels worlds away from the tourist madness around the cathedral. Waldecker Straße isn’t exactly where you’d expect to find a solid 4-star place, which is sort of the point. The building has that modern glass-and-concrete thing going on that could feel sterile, but there’s something about the way they’ve done the lobby with warm lighting and these oversized leather chairs that makes you want to actually hang out there with a coffee.

The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully designed rather than flashy – you get proper blackout curtains (thank god, because German summers mean daylight until like 9:30), decent-sized bathrooms with rainfall showers, and beds that don’t leave you feeling like you wrestled a pretzel all night. The 7.4 rating makes sense to me because it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Cologne, but everything just… works. I mean, the WiFi actually reaches every corner of the room, the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a helicopter landing, and there’s enough space to open your suitcase without doing yoga moves around the furniture. What surprised me was how quiet it stays even when they’re busy – the walls are thick enough that you’re not getting a play-by-play of your neighbor’s phone calls or TV habits.

Here’s the thing about staying in Buchforst that the hotel marketing probably won’t tell you straight up: you’re about a 15-minute S-Bahn ride from the city center, but that’s actually brilliant if you’re planning to explore beyond just the Old Town. The Deutz-Kalker Straße station is walkable, and honestly, after spending days wandering around the packed areas near the Rhine, coming back to this mellower neighborhood feels like a relief. You’ve got proper grocery stores nearby (not just tourist-priced convenience shops), and the breakfast at the hotel is substantial enough that you won’t need to hunt down coffee and pastries first thing – though I will say the scrambled eggs can be hit or miss depending on timing. The staff genuinely seems to know the area well; they pointed me toward this little Turkish place around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise. It’s not going to be the hotel you Instagram obsessively, but it’s the kind of place where you sleep well, eat decently, and feel like you made a smart choice rather than just an expensive one.

  Location is good for transport to cologne, parking is good. Rooms are a good size and bed is comfortable. Little extras like sweet trolley etc in reception is a lovely idea. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful.
  
  What could be improved: Hotel like a sauna far too hot. Unfortunately staff were a little sparce at breakfast time in the restaurant. Not very informative of what was around, just took room number and no information given. Thought some of the breakfast didn't look appealing. Will say it was unusual as been several times and this was the first occasion it happened. Will still return though. Good value for money.

  Friendly staff, lots of parking space. Room with a view of the Cathedral. The water pressure in the shower was amazing. The Christmas decorations in the lobby.

  The hotel is modern, clean, and comfortable. The team is friendly, helpful, and speak good English.
  It is a little out of the city centre but we knew that before booking.
  The centre is a short taxi drive away, or you walk 10 minutes up the road to a train station where you can travel straight to the centre.
  There's a little supermarket next door, which is great if you need a few essentials.

  How easy it was to check in and out. The breakfast was awesome. The bartender at the bar was awesome!!!! He even served me a double shot of whiskey after closing time
