Residenz am Dom Boardinghouse Apartments Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Residenz am Dom Boardinghouse Apartments, you immediately feel like you’ve stumbled onto something special in the heart of Cologne. This four-star property sits right on An den Dominikanern, which honestly couldn’t be more central if it tried — I mean, you’re literally steps from the cathedral and all the medieval charm of Altstadt-Nord. The building itself has this understated elegance that feels authentically German, not trying too hard to impress but succeeding anyway.

Location That Actually Matters

You know what’s rare? Finding a place where the location lives up to the hype, but this one really does. The couples who stay here aren’t wrong when they rate the location 9.8 — you can walk to the Dom in about two minutes, and the Rhine is just a pleasant stroll away. What I love is that you’re in the thick of things without dealing with the tourist chaos that hits some of the more obvious hotel strips. The Heumarkt and all those cozy breweries are right there, plus you’ve got easy access to the shopping areas when you need them.

The Apartment Experience

Here’s where things get interesting — these aren’t your typical hotel rooms. Each apartment feels like someone’s well-appointed city flat, complete with a proper kitchen that actually works (I’m talking full-size appliances, not those tiny hotel fridges). The spaces are thoughtfully designed with clean lines and warm touches that make you want to settle in for more than just a night. Storage is generous too, which matters when you’re doing the apartment-style stay and actually unpacking your life for a few days.

Practical Perks

The private parking situation is honestly a game-changer if you’re driving into Cologne — finding a spot in this part of the city can be a nightmare otherwise. What really caught my attention though is how many people come back here repeatedly. There’s something to be said for a place that earns that kind of loyalty, and after staying here, I get it. The staff seems to remember guests, and there’s this comfortable familiarity that develops. It’s not flashy service, just solid and reliable in a way that makes you feel looked after.

Why Guests Love It

This place works because it gives you the best of both worlds — the independence of having your own space with the backup of hotel-style service when you need it. You can grab groceries and cook breakfast in your own room, or head out to one of the nearby cafés for proper German coffee and pastries. The repeat guest thing isn’t just a marketing line either — you can feel it in how smoothly everything runs and how the place maintains that lived-in comfort without feeling worn. For couples especially, there’s something appealing about having a proper base in such a historic part of the city, somewhere you can retreat to and actually relax rather than just crash for the night.

Reviews of Residenz am Dom Boardinghouse Apartments

  • Great stay, helpful staff and clean room, amazing location. – Cagin from Turkey – August 4, 2025 (9/10)

Great location, correct price. Very spatious room. Kind and helpful staff. Great accessibility features if you need it.

What could be improved: Nothing really.

  • Perfect city break, with a kitchen! – W from United Kingdom – July 25, 2025 (10/10)

Really impressed with our 4 night stay here. The location was perfect, being a few minutes walk to the train station and the Dom, many restaurants , bars and kiosks, as well as public transport stops and a taxi rank. The 24 hour reception was very good, with the staff speaking English. We didn't try the hotel restaurant, cafe or fitness gym area but they all looked great. The twin bedroom apartment (zip link bed) was immaculately clean, large and airy. With a balcony, dining area, lounge area, wet room shower and kitchenette. The kitchen had a full size fridge with freezer compartment, a small oven, 4 ring hob, toaster and kettle. The WiFi was great, with no issues streaming video (to the TV through a phone with a HDMI cable) with TV's in both the lounge and bedroom. Overall, a quiet aparthotel in a great location. Would highly recommend and would definitely use again.

What could be improved: A microwave and a couple more pans and utensils in the kitchen would have been great but wasn't really an issue (there was a frying pan and a sauce pan).

  • Wonderful – Bodiadub from Ukraine – July 25, 2025 (9/10)

The room was large and spacious, and we really enjoyed the spa and the location of the accommodation.

What could be improved: We didn’t like the breakfasts — they were quite meager

  • Convenient location and spacious apartment – Dragan from Netherlands – July 20, 2025 (8/10)

This is senior citizen home, but apartments were nice and well equipped, and on nice location.

What could be improved: Homes for senior citizens and apartments are mixed.

  • Exceptional – Frances from Jersey – July 7, 2025 (10/10)

Superb location..and everything you need. Didn't realise it was a senior residential property but it didn't make any difference to us. Very close to Cathedral and main train station..danke!

  • Exceptional! – Helen from United Kingdom – July 5, 2025 (10/10)

Very spacious apartment, clean and comfortable, fast wifi and very central location. Reception staff were incredibly helpful both before and throughout our stay. We stayed in early July when it was extremely hot, the staff alerted us that there wasn't any air conditioning and made sure to offer fans for our room. There was major building work opposite us which started early in the mornings but we were lucky and it wasn't too noisy even with the windows open. We would definitely book here again if we came back to Cologne

What could be improved: Maybe a few extra pieces of cutlery/crockery/glasses would have been nice in the kitchen, but I'm sure they would have been provided if we'd asked for more

  • Very Good – Kay from Ireland – July 3, 2025 (8/10)

Nice big spacious apartment within walking distance to the everything.

What could be improved: Breakfast wasn't great for the price

  • Great choice in Cologne – Simon from Australia – July 2, 2025 (9/10)

Spacious, clean, comfortable room. Good location.

  • Very Good – James from United Kingdom – June 30, 2025 (8/10)

    Excellent location, good room facilities

  • Very comfortable and well situated. The staff were friendly and helpful. We’ll be back! – Hikuam from Switzerland – June 30, 2025 (9/10)

    Spacious, clean and safe.
