Hotel Gut Grossrotter Hof (ehem. Hotel Schmitte) Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Hotel Gut Grossrotter Hof (ehem. Hotel Schmitte), I’ll be honest — the name threw me off a bit. Turns out it used to be called Hotel Schmitte, which explains the parenthetical note. What struck me immediately was how this three-star property sits quietly in the Rondorf district, feeling more like a countryside retreat than your typical city hotel. The building has this understated charm that grows on you, and honestly, the free parking right on-site was already winning me over before I even checked in.
Location & Getting Around
Rondorf isn’t exactly central Cologne, but that’s actually part of its appeal. You’re about 20 minutes from the cathedral and main tourist areas, which means you get to experience a more residential side of the city. The neighborhood feels genuinely German — you know what I mean? — with tree-lined streets and that peaceful suburban vibe that’s perfect if you want to escape the hustle. I found myself taking evening walks around the area, and it’s the kind of place where locals nod hello as they pass by. The location offers easy access to public transportation, making it simple to reach the city center whenever you wish.
The Room Experience
My room was clean and functional, which is exactly what you’d expect from a solid three-star place. Nothing fancy, but everything worked properly — good water pressure, comfortable bed, decent Wi-Fi. The decor is a bit dated, I mean, we’re talking classic German hotel style here, but it’s well-maintained. What I appreciated most was the quiet — you really don’t hear much noise from other guests or the street, which made for genuinely restful nights. The windows are well-insulated, creating a peaceful sanctuary after a day of sightseeing.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast buffet is where this place really shines for what you’re paying. They’ve got a proper spread — fresh bread, local meats and cheeses, scrambled eggs, the works. I’m usually pretty picky about hotel breakfasts, but this one actually felt like they put thought into it rather than just throwing together whatever was cheapest. The dining area gets good morning light, and the staff keeps everything well-stocked even during busy periods. The restaurant staff are attentive and friendly, making mornings feel like a genuine experience rather than a rushed affair.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Hotel Gut Grossrotter Hof — it’s not trying to be something it’s not. Couples seem to really appreciate the peaceful atmosphere (which makes total sense), and I can see why it gets good ratings for romantic getaways. You’re getting solid value without any pretense, plus that rare commodity in Cologne: free parking. If you’re looking for a quiet base to explore the city from, or if you just want to experience a more local side of Cologne, this place delivers exactly what it promises. The staff goes out of their way to make guests feel welcome and comfortable throughout their stay.

Reviews of Hotel Gut Grossrotter Hof (ehem. Hotel Schmitte)
Quite a bit from Cologne, but comfortable – Vincent from Netherlands – January 15, 2025 (8/10)
After a long day of travel, the boxspring bed with the fresh sheets were a godsend!
What could be improved: WiFi didn’t work even though they said so, so I had to pay my telephone provider extra to get some internet going.Enjoyable – Julia from United States – October 15, 2024 (8/10)
Good rooms, good breakfast. Good parking
What could be improved: Lack of staff availableExcellent hotel for a mini-break to Köln – Robert from United Kingdom – September 26, 2024 (8/10)
We liked the closeness of the hotel from the A4 autobahn. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. Although the room was small it was very clean and well appointed. The bathroom facilities were very good with daily accessories at hand, for example, soap, hairdrier, tissues, etc.. The shower and bed were both exceptional. If the window was open the A4 autobahn could just be heard but not enough to keep us awake at night. The food at the bar/restaurant was very good. If you visit on a Wednesday their special is a potato pancake. We loved them.
What could be improved: Nothing stood out that needed changing or improving.A very comfortable place to stay in beautiful surroundings – David from Australia – September 22, 2024 (9/10)

What could be improved: NothingAlright for a couple nights. – Clara from Brazil – September 16, 2024 (6/10)
Good breakfast!
What could be improved: Room had tiny roaches dead on the floor. Room smelled a bit weird and sour, like passionfruit, but later we saw that the sanitizer used to clean the room smelled like that. No minibar or fridge in the room.Good location, adequate breakfast – David from United Kingdom – September 11, 2024 (6/10)
It was clean and the bed was comfortable. The shower was good and the breakfast was quite nice.
What could be improved: We couldn’t believe that there was no shampoo or shower gel provided! The staff were not very friendly. This accommodation had everything that gave value for money – Edwards from Australia – June 3, 2024 (8/10)
Very good variety fresh
Very comfortable stay – Janice from United Kingdom – May 22, 2024 (9/10)
Hotel staff were very friendly. The food in the restaurant delicious and breakfast was good. The location was perfect for allowing bus travel or walking to local shops and amenities. Car parking was a bonus too.
Ok but could do better. – Armin from Hong Kong – April 20, 2024 (7/10)
Comfy bed,
Hot water shower,
Clean,
Breakfast included was good
What could be improved: Shampoo/soap facilities in bathroom practically non-existent. Only had small paper sachets with soap in them. Paper for the shower works particularly well.Pleasant stay, on the outskirts of Cologne, just outside the low emission zone. – Carol from United Kingdom – August 6, 2023 (8/10)
Very pleasant hotel which is attached to a restaurant and tennis club. Free parking. Staff were very nice and helpful. Meals available in the restaurant.
What could be improved: Breakfast had limited choice.
