Garner Hotel Cologne – Engelbertz by IHG Overview
Look, I’ll be straight with you about the Garner Hotel – it’s one of those places that completely surprised me in the best way possible. Walking up to it on Obenmarspforten, you’re literally steps away from the Dom (and I mean literally – you can see those twin spires from some of the upper floor windows), but somehow it doesn’t feel like you’re staying in tourist central. The building itself has this understated charm that fits right into the cobblestone streets of Altstadt-Nord, and honestly, that’s refreshing when so many hotels in prime locations try way too hard to stand out.
What really got me was how the staff actually seemed to know Cologne – not just the obvious stuff tourists ask about, but real recommendations. The guy at reception told me about this little bakery on Hohe Straße that opens at 6 AM if I wanted proper German bread before the crowds hit, and he was absolutely right. The rooms are clean and comfortable without being fancy (it’s a 3-star, so manage expectations accordingly), but the beds are genuinely good quality and the bathrooms are renovated enough that you’re not dealing with weird European shower situations. I stayed on the third floor and barely heard any street noise, which was shocking given how close you are to everything.
Here’s the thing though – and this is why I’d stay here again – the location is actually perfect for people who want to experience Cologne like locals do, not just tick off tourist boxes. You’re a five-minute walk from the Heumarkt, where there’s always something happening in the evenings, and the same distance to those little wine bars tucked along the Rhine that most visitors never find. Plus, if you’re planning day trips (Bonn, Düsseldorf, even quick runs to Amsterdam), the Hauptbahnhof is close enough that you’re not dealing with expensive taxi rides or confusing public transport with luggage. The 8.1 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it delivers exactly what it promises and then some. I mean, for the price point and location, you’re getting solid value without any of those hidden fees or nasty surprises that seem to pop up everywhere these days. Just don’t expect a pool or fancy gym – but honestly, when you’re this close to everything worth seeing in Cologne, why would you want to spend time inside anyway?

Very Good – Barnsey from United Kingdom – August 5, 2025 (8/10)
Very close to the train stop, town including the cathedral and several food places, excellent location.
What could be improved: Room was a little small as I travelled with my daughter but would have been great for a couple. No twin room availability. Needed a shower mat, very slippery.Great staff and breakfast! Small room especially bathroom! – Morris from United Kingdom – July 16, 2025 (8/10)
Right in the centre of town with a great cafe over the road fantastic ice creams and cakes, very classy.
Best towels in any of the six we have stayed at over the last two weeks!!! Great friendly staff!
What could be improved: Very small bathroom and noise from the bar opposite late at night. The parking was close but still a pain to tote bags over.We really enjoyed it and would stay there again. – Marjo from United States – July 2, 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: NothingCute hotel in the middle of the city! – Sara from Sweden – June 26, 2025 (7/10)
The hotel was simple but very cute. The breakfast was good.
The location is very good in the middle of the city, so really good to go around the city.
What could be improved: It was a bit too warm to sleep. We had to keep our windows open and it helped a little bit.
In the morning the rubbish machine was around quite early in the morning, so we woke up very early.Very Good – Catherine from United Kingdom – June 26, 2025 (8/10)
Very friendly staff. Quiet at night but very handy for historic town, river and station.

Perfect location, friendly and helpful staff and the breakfast was good! Would stay here again
What could be improved: Currently doing the place up so there’s people working. It didn’t affect anyone noise wise it’s just the only slightly negative thing to sayExcellent despite the concrens/ – Jake from United Kingdom – June 17, 2025 (9/10)
Well placed. good breakfast – included in price.
What could be improved: Hotel had changed its name and address didn't match that advertised. So difficult to find: annoying after a long day of travel.
And it seems that blooking.com had been hacked. I received a number of emails in May ostensibly from the hotel, but plainly phishing. This made me nervous about the booking.Wonderful – Nadir from Turkey – June 4, 2025 (9/10)
The very first thing is the location. We realy didnot feel the depth of daily walk around the city because we were able to go back to the hotel to rest. Staff were friendly and helpful. Clean and moneys worth. Thanks to all.
