The name actually makes perfect sense once you see the place – it’s this beautifully restored historical building that somehow feels both grand and intimate at the same time. I mean, we’re talking about a 4-star property that’s earned a 9.7 rating, and honestly, after staying there, I get why people are raving about it.

The location on Sechzigstraße in Nippes is pretty clever, actually. Most tourists camp out in Altstadt or around the cathedral, but Nippes has this authentic neighborhood vibe that feels properly Cologne without the tourist crowds. You’re still close enough to hop on the U-Bahn and be in the city center in maybe 15 minutes, but you get to experience how locals actually live. There’s this great little bakery just down the street where I grabbed coffee every morning – the kind of place where the barista remembers your order by day three. And parking? Way easier than anywhere near the old town, which your rental car will thank you for.

What really sets zehuus apart is how they’ve handled the historical elements. Instead of that sterile “historic hotel” feeling you sometimes get (you know, where everything’s so preserved it feels like a museum), they’ve woven the old character into something that actually feels lived-in. The rooms have these gorgeous high ceilings and original details, but the beds are properly comfortable and the bathrooms are modern without being jarring. I stayed during a particularly rainy October week, and the building was surprisingly quiet – thick walls, I guess, which made for great sleep even when the weather was doing its dramatic German autumn thing.

The staff seem to genuinely care about the place, which always makes a difference. Check-in was smooth, and they had actual recommendations for dinner spots in the neighborhood (not just the obvious tourist places). One thing I appreciated – they were realistic about timing for things like housekeeping and restaurant reservations, none of that overpromising you sometimes get at boutique places trying too hard.

If I’m being completely honest, the only minor thing was that the historical charm means some quirks – my room’s shower had amazing pressure but took a minute to find the right temperature balance, and the original windows are beautiful but you can hear a bit of street noise in the early morning. But honestly? These felt like character traits rather than problems, especially at this price point in a city like Cologne. The whole experience just felt authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find. This isn’t some chain hotel pretending to have personality – it’s a place with actual history that’s been thoughtfully brought into the present without losing what makes it special.

  The entire apartment, the kind hosts, the neighbourhood are all just amazing. The interior design of the apartment is of good taste, and very clean. They provide good coffee maker, and full culinary items where one can prepare meals at the apartment like being at home.
  There were few big and nice parks nearby, where I could do my daily exercises, great! There is a very nice little Italy restaurant just 1 min walk and a good bakery down at next door made the stay extra good! The host was so kind and nice to have let me had an early check-in, as well as a very late check-out which had truly a great help for me, Thank you very much Andreas!!

  Die Wohnung ist sehr liebevoll und geschmackvoll eingerichtet. Sie war sehr sauber, toll ausgestattet und alles ist hochwertig. Man fühlt sich sofort wohl.

  J'ai adoré ce logement, l'un des meilleurs que j'ai réservé et je voyage beaucoup!
  
  Tout est excellent :
  – la localisation : à 2 arrêts de train de la gare central, on est prêt de tout, tout en étant dans un environnement de qualité. L'accès facile à l'Université se fait par le bus direct (25 minutes). Le quartier est très agréable : calme, avec beaucoup de verdure, toutes les commodités, différents types de transports et beaucoup de restaurants. Le supermarché est également à 3 minutes à pied!
  – le bâtiment est entièrement rénové : très beau et élégant, avec un petit aire de galerie d'art.
  – l'appartement est magnifique : les grandes fenêtres, un design élégant et bien pensé, une belle décoration, la chambre qui donne sur la cour (mais la rue est très calme également), l'équipement complet de toutes les pièces.
  – propreté irréprochable.
  – la gentillesse, l'hospitalité et la disponibilité des hôtes.
  
  Il ne manque plus qu'une petite terrasse :-))))
  
  C'est incontestablement la meilleure option d'hébergement à Cologne.
  
  What could be improved: – quelquefois, on peut entendre un peu les voisins de dessus;
  – certaines personnes habituées à dormir dans l'obscurité totale pourraient sentir le besoin d'avoir un système de black-out dans la chambre.
  
  mais ce ne sont que les détails car vous y passerez un séjour inoubliable.

  Kein Frühstück gebucht aber wie vorher beschrieben tolle Bäckerei (auch am Sonntag) in 10 m Entfernung. Super Siebträger-Kaffeemaschine und Kaffee vorhanden. Ausstattung war vollständig. Alles super sauber. Netter, unkomplizierter Empfang. Altstadt zu Fuß erreichbar. Wohlfühlcharakter sehr ausgeprägt.

  Eine herrliche Denkmalgeschützte Unterkunft, es fehlte uns an nichts! Eine Bäckerei keine 10 Meter von der Unterkunft entfernt, Parkplätze für 5€ den Tag leicht zu ergattern und eine perfekte U-Bahn Anbindung in der Nähe. Wir haben es genossen!
