Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places around Cologne, but this little gem on Sechzigstraße actually surprised me. The Zehuus Gartenstudio sits right in Nippes – and if you don’t know Nippes, it’s one of those neighborhoods that locals love but tourists somehow miss. It’s got this authentic German residential feel without being stuffy or pretentious. When I first walked up to number 23, honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the name “Gartenstudio,” but the moment you step inside, it makes perfect sense. The space feels more like staying at a design-savvy friend’s place than a typical hotel room.

What really got me was the terrace – and I mean, they’re not overselling it in the name. You’re basically getting your own little outdoor retreat where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of just traffic (though you’ll get some of that too, this is still a city). The studio itself has this sort of curated-but-lived-in vibe that’s hard to pull off. Everything feels intentional without being fussy, if you know what I mean. I actually ended up spending way more time there than I planned because it was genuinely comfortable to just… exist in. The kitchen setup is proper functional too – not one of those sad hotel kitchenettes with a broken coffee maker. I made actual meals there, which honestly saved me a fortune since Cologne’s restaurant prices can be brutal.

Here’s the thing about staying in Nippes though – you’re close enough to everything that matters (the cathedral, the museums, all that) but far enough out that you get a real sense of how people actually live here. The S-Bahn connections are solid, and there’s this great little Turkish bakery just down the street that I hit up every morning. Parking was surprisingly manageable for this part of the city, which anyone who’s driven in Cologne will appreciate. The whole experience felt refreshingly un-touristy, and with a 9.7 rating, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’re doing something right. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to come back to your room at the end of the day instead of just crashing there because you have to.

  Sehr zentral und dennoch ruhig gelegen, Bus, S-Bahn, Supermärkte, Restaurants in der Nähe. Man ist schnell in der Innenstadt. Schlaf und Wohnzimmer waren nach hinten raus zu einem Hinterhof mit kleiner Terasse, und darum recht ruhig. Bett war sehr bequem. Küche gut ausgestattet. Schlicht und modern, aber schön eingerichtet, das minimalistische hat auf jeden Fall was. Kommunikation und check-in/check-out waren sehr unkompliziert und flexibel. Für unsere Pläne in Köln auf jeden Fall ideal gelegen. Wir kommen bestimmt wieder!
  
  What could be improved: In der Küche hätte man ein Geschirrtuch und einen Wischlappen (nicht nur Schwamm) gebrauchen können. Teewasser musste man in so einem großen Kessel auf dem Ceranfeld machen, das dauert natürlich sehr viel länger als mit einem Wasserkocher bis das heiß ist. Das größere Problem war aber eher dass man diesen Kessel unmöglich mit einer Hand halten konnte, man hätte also eigentlich 3 Hände gebraucht, zwei zum halten und ausgießen des Kessels und eine zum festhalten des Teebeutels, dass der nicht untergeht. Ein Wasserkocher wäre praktischer, aber das ist wirklich ein Luxusproblem, grade für einen kürzeren Aufenthalt. Ansonsten war noch etwas unpraktisch, dass es in der Dusche in dem Sinne kein direktes Licht gab und man die Handtücher nicht so platzieren konnte, dass man sie direkt hätte greifen können. Aber das ist auch nur ein Luxusproblem.

  Einfacher Check-in mit unkomplizierter Schlüsselübergabe, super Tipps vom Eigentümer zu Essen & Umgebung. Direkt nebenan ein richtig leckerer Bäcker! Die Lage ist top, das Bett war super bequem und die Unterkunft war perfekt ausgestattet – alles da, was man braucht. Sehr zu empfehlen!

  Wir wurden sehr freundlich willkommen geheißen.
  Die Lage im Sechzigviertel ist sehr schön. Es gibt etliche Restaurants in der Umgebung.
  Die Wohnung ist mit sehr viel Liebe zum Detail eingerichtet und mit Rücksicht auf den Denkmalschutz.
  Es war erstaunlich ruhig.

  A modern, clean and comfortable unit. It was very quiet for sleeping. We loved the bakery next door and plenty of restaurant options close by.
  
  What could be improved: Parking of an evening was tight but we found something a few blocks away. The location wouldn't suit everyone but we enjoyed staying in a community where locals live rather than a touristy area. It's a level walk to the city centre.

  Mooi appartement op begane grond. Konden onze fietsen binnen parkeren; super. Zit naast de warme bakker; handig. Ruime slaapkamer en mooi groot keukenblok/eetkamer en TV/zitbank ruimte. Buitenterrasje aanwezig maar niet gebruikt; te warm. Lekkere espresso machine en een doos Illy koffie stond klaar; heerlijke koffie. Rustige straat en parkeren in de straat met auto prima te doen voor 5,- per dag.

  Een heerlijke plek. Nieuw en mooi en brandschoon. Naast een bakker dus ‘s morgens zelf je ontbijtje maken en in het tuintje zitten. De keuken is compleet en het bed is heerlijk
