TheClouth Overview

You know what struck me first about TheClouth? The name itself – it’s actually a nod to the old Clouth rubber factory that used to dominate this part of Nippes, and honestly, that industrial heritage still feels present in the best possible way. The building has this understated, almost warehouse-chic vibe that doesn’t try too hard to impress, which I mean, is refreshing when you’re tired of cookie-cutter hotel lobbies.

The location on Niehler Straße is one of those spots that locals know but tourists often miss – you’re genuinely in a residential neighborhood where actual Cologne residents live and work, not some sanitized tourist bubble. There’s a decent bakery literally around the corner (get there before 9 AM on weekends), and you can walk to the Rhine in about fifteen minutes through streets that actually show you what daily life looks like here. The tram connections are solid too – line 15 gets you to the Dom in maybe twenty minutes, though I’d honestly recommend the walk along the river when the weather’s decent. Parking can be a bit of a dance if you’re driving, but there’s usually something within a block or two.

Inside, it’s what I’d call smart simplicity. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully laid out – someone clearly spent time figuring out where you’d actually want to plug in your phone or set down a coffee cup. The beds are comfortable enough (I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathrooms are modern without being flashy. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night, even though you’re on a fairly busy street – the windows do their job. Staff at check-in were genuinely helpful rather than just polite, if you know what I mean. They actually knew the neighborhood and could point you toward things beyond the obvious tourist spots. The breakfast isn’t elaborate, but it covers what you need, and they don’t rush you out if you want to linger over coffee and plan your day.

Look, this isn’t a place that’s going to wow you with marble lobbies or rooftop pools, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want. It’s honest, well-run, and sits in a part of Cologne that gives you space to breathe while still being connected to everything. For a three-star place, it punches above its weight in the details that actually matter when you’re trying to sleep well and explore a city.

Reviews of TheClouth

  • Wonderful – Omer from Turkey – April 8, 2025 (9/10)

There is no door bathroom.the only negative thing.
    All the others were amazing

  • Overall a great stay in the property. Andreas was very quick to respond to queries on check in. The space is lovely, fee – Michaella from United Kingdom – March 4, 2025 (9/10)

Great location, easy to get to and rooms were lovely and a good size. Very clean and quiet and the staff were very helpful when needed.

What could be improved: I didn’t dislike anything about the property but would have been great to have more hanging space for clothes and a full length mirror in the room. Also lighting in the room is very dark.

  • Clean, comfortable stay – Peter from United Kingdom – March 4, 2025 (8/10)

    Large comfortable rooms

What could be improved: Check in process and using the digital key was a little frustrating

  • Nice stay in quiet hotel with comfortable beds and bathroom – Hermsen from Netherlands – December 20, 2024 (8/10)

Modern hotel with nice public staying area and well sized rooms with separate toilet and seperate good sized bathroom. Quiet location nearby a parc and public transport. Convenient to travel within 20 min to the centre of Cologne.

What could be improved: Upon arrival we had some difficulties to find the entrance to the hotel from the garage.

We also didn't have yet received the code to open the door of the building but people had to go to the toilet. Then it's very difficult to enter the hotel, because there is no reception, everything is digital.

  • Positives and negatives – Susan from Spain – December 15, 2024 (8/10)

The room was clean, comfortable, modern and warm.
    Tv and hairdryer included.
Spotless crisp white bedding and towels.
Everything we needed and wanted for a room for a short stay but as there is no wardrobe for hanging clothes for longer periods you may struggle..
Perhaps hard to describe it as a hotel. More like lovely rooms in a conference centre. Nice industrial feel.
    Would I stay again.
Yes Because I liked the room .
No because of the distance to the city centre for the cathedral and christmas markets . The reason for my visit.

What could be improved: The checkin procedure.
It can only be done on A smartphone . Check in online to access a page of electronic keys. Which you swipe to open the front door of the building and make your way up to the third floor.
There you will need to scan a QR code and it opens a page to where you add your name and booking number not the confirmation number as i kept doing.. Only then do you get your room number. And another key added to your phone. Swipe to open the third floor door and go to the room.
Just to much hassle and with 6% battery life I had to make a phone call to get assistance .

The location was OK ,clean and safe and restaurants were available in the area. but the distance from the centre was just to far to walk (45 minutes). We took a Bolt car there and back 9-15 euros. I believe a tram stop is about a 10 minutes walk from the complex.

Lack of clothing storage space may be an issue as no wardrobe only 2 coat hangers.

  • Enough for short stays, helpful staff – Senem from Turkey – December 15, 2024 (7/10)

    Location, and support

What could be improved: Entrance process, door opening, self check in was difficult at first

  • Nice room, a bit of trouble checking in – Tin from Netherlands – December 8, 2024 (7/10)

Spacious room, modern design, nice shower etc

What could be improved: The check-in process was quite bad, we were supposed to get a message with our check in details but never got anything. Luckily the person on the phone was nice and helpful and managed to help us get in after a little bit of trouble.

The thing that switches between water coming from above and from the shower-head was broken

  • Very Good – Claire from United Kingdom – December 1, 2024 (8/10)

    Large clean rooms. Very comfortable

What could be improved: Nothing. No staff. It's a self service hotel

  • Would Stay again – Michael from Ireland – September 18, 2024 (8/10)

Location was in a nice area, very safe..

What could be improved: The issues with the key cards was a continuous headache, although it got sorted in the end. Important to not ethe hotel changed management the week before our stay, so teething problems are natural. The concierge was a great guy.

  • Wonderful – Sylvia from Sweden – September 9, 2024 (9/10)

Easy checkin. Clean spacious rooms. Great customer service.

What could be improved: No airconditioning and it was 32 degrees outside. The windows did however open so we got some fresh air.
