The LIV. – Central Station Overview
You know what struck me first about The LIV.? It’s actually got personality – which honestly isn’t something you can say about most 3-star places near train stations. I mean, when you see “Central Station” in the name, you’re bracing yourself for generic corporate vibes and the constant rumble of trains, but this spot on Altenberger Straße surprised me in the best way.
The location is pretty brilliant if you think about it. Yeah, you’re a quick walk from Köln Hauptbahnhof (which, let’s be real, is incredibly handy when you’re juggling luggage), but you’re also right in Altstadt-Nord where things get interesting. I loved that I could grab coffee at one of those little cafes on nearby streets in the morning, then be at the Dom in like ten minutes on foot. The neighborhood has this lived-in feel – not touristy, just regular Cologne life happening around you. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving, but honestly, you probably won’t need a car much once you’re settled in.
What really gets me about The LIV. is how they’ve managed to feel modern without trying too hard. The rooms are clean and well-designed – nothing fancy, but everything works properly, which is more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed. The beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms feel updated without being sterile. You’ll hear some city noise, but it’s not the constant train sounds you might expect – more like the gentle hum of a neighborhood that’s alive but not chaotic. Check-in was smooth, staff seemed genuinely helpful rather than just going through the motions. I appreciated that they knew the area well enough to give real recommendations, not just the obvious tourist spots everyone suggests. The common areas have this relaxed energy – you can tell they put thought into making the space feel welcoming rather than just functional. Honestly, for the price point and that 8/10 rating, it makes total sense. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere that locals might actually recommend, not just another hotel that happens to exist in Cologne.
Cologne’s apartments offer spacious accommodations with modern amenities, perfect for families wanting to experience daily life in this historically significant German city.

Reviews of The LIV. – Central Station
Comfortable and close to station – Carol from United States – July 2, 2025 (9/10)
The LIV is easy walking distance from Köln Bahnhof – less than ten minutes. The neighbor hood is not great but it is very close to the cathedral and shopping and restaurants . The staff is very helpful in communicating instructions for the self checkin and security which all went smoothly. The room itself is clean, has a mini kitchen and some coffee tea supplies and other things for a short stay. We did not have the room in the picture with the little couch, which would have made e it a bit more comfortable. The room was clean and there was a much appreciated fan which was very helpful in the summer heat. What was slightly inconvenient was the placement of the electrical outlets for charging phones and computers. None were by the bed and one was close to the door. It also would have been helpful to have a bedside table. Other than that would recommend
Overall nice apartment, very good for the price – Veronika from Hungary – April 6, 2025 (8/10)
The location is quite convenient. Right next to the main train station and close to old town.
The apartment was big enough for 3 people.
Naybe the only negative thing is that the sofa bed was extremely loud. Second night we had to close it and sleep on the sofa itself because it was a nightmare.Very Good – Stoop from Germany – April 4, 2025 (8/10)
The bed was very comfortable and the kitchenette was small but very practical! Very close to the city centre
What could be improved: There was no remote control, we didn't mind to much so we felt we didn't need to contact the owners.Enjoy Köln without a rush and well located! – Claudia from Belgium – March 31, 2025 (8/10)
The location is superb! Next to the train station and tram. The apartment very clean and comfortable.
The only thing that disturbed us was that at 1am of Saturday a group of young people staying at The LIV opened the main door (exactly underneath our apartment) of the building making a lot of noise, shouting and noticeable loud voices. Lots of noise in the stairs going up and that was really annoying. Then the same happened at 2am. So we got woke up twice that night. But well, the rest of the stay was very nice.Great location, clean, good facilities but uncomfortable sofa bed. – Rujbinder from United Kingdom – February 21, 2025 (7/10)
Location was excellent very close to Köln central station and cathedral.
Nice and clean.
Good facilities.
What could be improved: We had a room booked for 3. So one of us slept on a sofa bed which creaked and was very uncomfortable. We contacted the owner who replied promptly and changed our room. However the sofa bed in the next room was the same. If you are advertising family rooms all the beds need to be comfortable.Very quiet apartment around the corner from the main station – Yhk1234 from Australia – February 6, 2025 (8/10)
Great location, warm and clean, nice bathroom
What could be improved: No lift, few utensils in the kitchenGreat stay – Khairul from Malaysia – February 5, 2025 (9/10)
Very close to Köln Hbf. Room is big and comfortable. Coffee machine is a plus.
Very close to train station and nice. – Andrea from United States – December 12, 2024 (9/10)
Clean. Close to train station. Liked the locked courtyard door. Liked shower and bathroom. Big comfortable bed. Liked being able to heat up food. Happy to have a refrigerator to keep food and drinks cold.
What could be improved: Had a little trouble with the second door. There is a code for the courtyard door. Then there is a second door, and we could not figure out how to unlock it. There is a lock box on the wall, and our code didn’t work on it. We were distracted by that lock box, and didn’t realize that you didn’t need a code-just push on that door. No lock. No code needed. Then your personal room will unlock with the code. Another guest told us that they also struggled with that second door.
Would have liked a microwave. Just not enough room in the mini kitchen.
Personally, did not mind, but our room was up stairs on the third floor. (I expected this because I read about it in a review before we booked.)Can’t beat the location and price. – Lauren from United States – December 6, 2024 (9/10)
Amazing location. It was just a few minutes walk from the train station and was a perfect area to stay. We took the train in so it worked out well for us. The key pad and self check in was super easy and convenient. The kitchenette was a nice touch too, had coffee and machine provided as well. I would definitely stay here again, was perfect for our quick trip.
What could be improved: There was sometimes a quick smell of sewage that would come from the bathroom drain on occasion.Perfect Cologne hub for a city break – Rachael from United Kingdom – December 3, 2024 (8/10)
I loved the location, layout and amenities. It was a perfect location and gave me everything I needed for my trip. I felt safe and the room had everything I needed to make my mini break comfortable and convenient.
What could be improved: It was a little noisy in terms of the ability to hear other guests.
