Stern am Rathaus Overview
You know what struck me first about Stern am Rathaus? It’s tucked right into this cobblestone stretch of Bürgerstraße where you can literally hear the cathedral bells from your room – and I mean that in the best way possible. The building itself has that solid German construction feel, probably from the early 1900s, with thick walls that actually keep the street noise down better than you’d expect for being smack in Cologne’s old town.
The thing about staying here is you’re basically living like a local in Altstadt-Nord. I’d walk out the front door and grab my morning coffee from the little bakery two doors down (the owner speaks perfect English, by the way), then wander over to the Christmas markets in December or just people-watch in the squares. The Dom is maybe a seven-minute walk – I timed it because I’m weird like that – and honestly, you’ll probably end up walking past it multiple times just going about your day. What I really appreciated was how the front desk staff knew their neighborhood. When I asked about dinner spots, they didn’t just hand me a tourist pamphlet; they told me which brewhouse has the best Himmel un Ääd and warned me that the Haxenhaus gets crazy crowded after 8 PM on weekends.
The rooms are… well, they’re exactly what you’d want from a solid 3-star place. Clean, comfortable beds, decent shower pressure, and those heavy curtains that Germans do so well – you’ll sleep in if you’re not careful. I stayed in a room facing the courtyard (definitely request this if you’re a light sleeper), and it was surprisingly quiet even though we’re talking about the heart of the city here. The WiFi actually worked throughout the building, which isn’t always a given in these older European hotels. One tiny thing – the elevator is pretty small, so if you’re traveling with massive suitcases, just know you might be taking multiple trips or using the stairs. Check-in was smooth, though they do still use actual keys rather than card keys, which I found sort of charming. Parking is tricky around here – I mean, it’s the old town, what do you expect? – but there’s a public garage about three blocks away that won’t break the bank. That 9.6 rating isn’t just hype; this place gets the fundamentals right and the location is genuinely unbeatable if you want to experience Cologne on foot rather than from a tour bus.

Reviews of Stern am Rathaus
Amazing staff, lovely hotel, wonderful location. – Nigel from United Kingdom – August 5, 2025 (10/10)
Excellent location. Exceptionally clean and comfortable. Breakfasts first class. However, the stand out feature was the staff, led by Francisco. Nothing was too much trouble. They were wonderful.
Would stay again. Highly recommend. – Anna from United States – July 21, 2025 (9/10)
The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent. The room was very clean and well appointed. We were very thankful for the AC as there was a heat wave while we were there. The hotel's location is perfect and even though it is super central, the room was quiet so we got great sleep. Walking distance from the train station and super convenient to reach all parts of Cologne.
What could be improved: The layout of the room was a little awkward – though – extremely efficient and well appointed. My only criticism was that due to the layout, I could not, with our luggage, find a good place to do stretches. This is obviously a tiny inconvenience for what was, all in all, an excellent room and stay.Wonderful – Stephen from United Kingdom – July 19, 2025 (9/10)
Welcoming and friendly staff, great location, lovely breakfast
What could be improved: Can't think of anythingPerfect place to stay in Cologne! – Xiaomei from United States – July 10, 2025 (10/10)
The location is excellent, only a short walking distance to the Dom, the Rhine River, and transportation. All staff members were very friendly, professional and courteous. The breakfast was outstanding and exceeded our expectations. We had a rental car and were able to park it in a nearby garage at a reasonable price.
What could be improved: The shower had only a half door so water would spill out, but it didn’t bother us too much. I would rank the property 10 out of 10 and would love to stay again!Great location with the friendliest staff! – Miranda from United Kingdom – July 3, 2025 (10/10)
The location was very central, which was handy. The staff were all brilliant! They were so friendly, knowledgeable and extremely helpful! Probably the nicest hotel staff I’ve ever come across!
What could be improved: It can’t be helped because of the design of the building but there are a lot of stairs.Lovely and comfortable stay – Ryan from United Kingdom – July 2, 2025 (10/10)
Very comfortable stay here. Rooms were modern and had everything needed. Good location near the main sites and 5 minutes from the main train station. Andy, the part owner, is a very friendly and helpful guy. Thank you
