Rhein Hotel St. Martin Overview

You know what struck me first about the Rhein Hotel St. Martin? It’s that perfect sweet spot where you’re literally steps from the Rhine but tucked into this quieter stretch of Frankenwerft that doesn’t get the tourist madness of the main Altstadt drag. I mean, you can actually hear the river at night if you get a room facing the water – which, honestly, you should request because the courtyard-facing ones can pick up some kitchen noise from the nearby restaurants.

The building itself has that classic Cologne charm without trying too hard. It’s not one of those places that’s been renovated within an inch of its life, but it’s clean and the rooms are bigger than you’d expect for the price point. The staff actually knows the neighborhood – like, they’ll tell you to hit up Peters Brauhaus around the corner instead of the tourist trap beer halls closer to the Dom, and they’re absolutely right about that. Check-in was smooth when I arrived around 3pm on a Thursday, though I imagine weekends during Karneval season might be a different story entirely.

What really works here is the location without the location premium, if that makes sense. You’re a genuine five-minute walk to the cathedral and all that, but you’re also right there when the evening crowd thins out and you can actually enjoy the riverside walk. The Deutzer Brücke is right there too – great for morning jogs if you’re into that, or just crossing over to get those classic Cologne skyline photos. Parking is street parking mostly, which means you’ll be feeding meters during the day, but honestly that’s pretty standard for anywhere this central in Cologne. The nearest U-Bahn stop is Heumarkt, maybe a seven-minute walk, and that connects you to everything you’d want to see without dealing with the chaos around Hauptbahnhof.

The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – nothing fancy, but the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are updated enough that you’re not dealing with ancient fixtures. WiFi actually works, which shouldn’t be noteworthy but you’d be surprised how many places in the Altstadt still struggle with that. Breakfast is continental style, nothing revolutionary, but the coffee’s decent and they usually have some local touches like proper German breads and regional jams.

Look, it’s not going to blow your mind, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want. It’s the kind of place where you can dump your bags, grab a quick shower, and be out exploring without feeling like you’re either slumming it or overpaying for amenities you won’t use. The 7.7 rating feels about right – solidly good without any major surprises either way. If you’re the type who wants to spend your money on experiencing Cologne rather than on your hotel room, this is your spot.

Hotels in Cologne offer visitors the opportunity to stay in the heart of this historic city, with easy access to museums, galleries, and traditional beer halls.

Reviews of Rhein Hotel St. Martin

  • Good location for a short stay. – Bryan from United States – July 29, 2025 (8/10)

    Great location and clean.

What could be improved: Just a bit expensive for a small room, but the location is a big attraction. My room was in the adjoining building which meant that I could not take the elevator all of the way to my room, so it was annoying to carry my bags up a flight of stairs. There was a very small free breakfast available, but the facilities could not handle many people. Otherwise, it was a good choice for a short stay.

  • Very good hotel, just needs a detail cleaning and small repair – Baizhou from United Kingdom – July 25, 2025 (9/10)

The room waa spacipus, mostly clean, the bed and bedding were clean. Interior of the junior suite was very nice. Bathroom was clean and has high quality fittinga.

What could be improved: The shower drain was blocked so after a shower it flooded the room, sadly. The carpet needs attention as it has very bad stains and is in need of a deep clean.

  • Wonderful – Steinunn from Iceland – July 3, 2025 (9/10)

The location was excellent.Clean room and cool in very hot days. No sounds from the street.

  • Successful business trip – Vesa-matti from Finland – June 27, 2025 (9/10)

Good view to the river, short walk to centre.

What could be improved: There was no breakfast available in the hotel, and it was not included in the price. Breakfast could be had in an adjacent restaurant, and was OK.

  • Excellent location to enjoy Cologne – Simon from United Kingdom – April 6, 2025 (9/10)

The location is excellent, overlooking the Rhine and right in the middle of the old town area

What could be improved: Discounted parking didn’t work so we had to pay an additional 32 Euros

  • Overall we enjoyed our stay hear – Stacy from United Kingdom – March 25, 2025 (8/10)

Staff were friendly and helpful and the room was very clean and tidy

What could be improved: The only problem was the 2 single beds, although they were comfortable a double bed would have been better

  • Mr Mai has amazing customer service. Overall, if it wasn’t for his respectful understanding, I probably would’ve found a – Tammy from United States – March 10, 2025 (7/10)

Mr. Mai was amazing and very understanding!

What could be improved: First room had a very bad smell
Room was not what I ordered when choosing my room
Was told I get a 10% discount from the restaurant next door, they did not honer, food was not good and told them still paid full price and had to go somewhere else because we were still hungry after a long day of work. Over all very disappointing! Pictures shows room I ordered and selected and the room I got and on top of it the toilet was so high I had to jump up not recommended for smaller people

  • Comfortable stay – Mary from Germany – January 22, 2025 (9/10)

Very comfortable room for one person and excellent location, nice offers for breakfast and a discount for the next door restaurant.

What could be improved: Minor point, there was no foyer or public area for socialising with other guests after the restaurant closed. my family were staying in another room and it was a bit small for us all to sit in the room together. But as a single person it was perfect.

  • Great hotel, nice location, great staff and good value for money. – Robert from Germany – January 10, 2025 (7/10)

The staff (Her name I believe was Koffi) she is an amazing person.

What could be improved: Not much

  • Great location, central to Christmas market – John from Spain – January 1, 2025 (9/10)

Location was great. Room was cozy and warm.

    What could be improved: Nothing
