Residenz am Dom Boardinghouse Apartments Overview
You know, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to Residenz am Dom – the building itself is pretty understated, tucked away on this narrow cobblestone street called An den Dominikanern. But honestly? That’s kind of the point. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Cologne Cathedral (I mean, you can see the spires from some of the upper floor windows), but you’re not dealing with the tourist chaos that comes with staying right on the main drag.
The apartments themselves are what really sold me on this place. These aren’t your typical cramped hotel rooms – they’ve got proper kitchens with full-sized fridges, which is actually a godsend when you realize how expensive it gets eating out in the Altstadt every single meal. The design is clean and modern without being sterile, sort of that Scandinavian-meets-German efficiency vibe. What I really appreciated were the little touches – good coffee in the kitchen setup, blackout curtains that actually work (crucial if you’re jet-lagged), and decent water pressure in the showers. The WiFi is solid too, which matters if you’re trying to work remotely or just need to figure out which U-Bahn line gets you to whatever museum you’re hunting down that day.
Location-wise, this is where they really nailed it. You’re in the heart of old Cologne, but on a side street that goes quiet after about 9 PM – no drunk tourists stumbling past your window at 2 AM like you’d get closer to the Heumarkt. Walk five minutes south and you’re at the Rhine waterfront where locals actually hang out, not just the tour groups. The Wallraf-Richartz Museum is around the corner, and if you head toward Hohe Straße (the main shopping street), there’s this little Turkish place that does incredible döner – way better than the tourist traps near the cathedral. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare in this area, honestly, but there’s a garage about two blocks away, and the front desk folks will actually give you proper directions instead of just shrugging. The whole check-in process was refreshingly straightforward too – no upselling, no complicated key card situations, just “here’s your apartment, here’s how everything works, let us know if you need anything.” That 8.8 rating makes sense when you experience this kind of no-nonsense hospitality in a city where plenty of places coast on location alone.

Great stay, helpful staff and clean room, amazing location. – Cagin from Turkey – August 4, 2025 (9/10)
Great location, correct price. Very spatious room. Kind and helpful staff. Great accessibility features if you need it.
What could be improved: Nothing really.Perfect city break, with a kitchen! – W from United Kingdom – July 25, 2025 (10/10)
Really impressed with our 4 night stay here. The location was perfect, being a few minutes walk to the train station and the Dom, many restaurants , bars and kiosks, as well as public transport stops and a taxi rank. The 24 hour reception was very good, with the staff speaking English. We didn't try the hotel restaurant, cafe or fitness gym area but they all looked great. The twin bedroom apartment (zip link bed) was immaculately clean, large and airy. With a balcony, dining area, lounge area, wet room shower and kitchenette. The kitchen had a full size fridge with freezer compartment, a small oven, 4 ring hob, toaster and kettle. The WiFi was great, with no issues streaming video (to the TV through a phone with a HDMI cable) with TV's in both the lounge and bedroom. Overall, a quiet aparthotel in a great location. Would highly recommend and would definitely use again.
What could be improved: A microwave and a couple more pans and utensils in the kitchen would have been great but wasn't really an issue (there was a frying pan and a sauce pan).Wonderful – Bodiadub from Ukraine – July 25, 2025 (9/10)
The room was large and spacious, and we really enjoyed the spa and the location of the accommodation.
What could be improved: We didn’t like the breakfasts — they were quite meagerConvenient location and spacious apartment – Dragan from Netherlands – July 20, 2025 (8/10)
This is senior citizen home, but apartments were nice and well equipped, and on nice location.
What could be improved: Homes for senior citizens and apartments are mixed.Exceptional – Frances from Jersey – July 7, 2025 (10/10)
Superb location..and everything you need. Didn't realise it was a senior residential property but it didn't make any difference to us. Very close to Cathedral and main train station..danke!
Exceptional! – Helen from United Kingdom – July 5, 2025 (10/10)
Very spacious apartment, clean and comfortable, fast wifi and very central location. Reception staff were incredibly helpful both before and throughout our stay. We stayed in early July when it was extremely hot, the staff alerted us that there wasn't any air conditioning and made sure to offer fans for our room. There was major building work opposite us which started early in the mornings but we were lucky and it wasn't too noisy even with the windows open. We would definitely book here again if we came back to Cologne
What could be improved: Maybe a few extra pieces of cutlery/crockery/glasses would have been nice in the kitchen, but I'm sure they would have been provided if we'd asked for moreVery Good – Kay from Ireland – July 3, 2025 (8/10)
