Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of hotels in Cologne, and the Premier Inn Köln City Süd honestly surprised me in the best way possible. You know how sometimes you book a place and cross your fingers it won’t be terrible? Well, this wasn’t one of those times. Right on Perlengraben – which sounds way fancier than it actually is, but that’s kind of the point – you’re literally a few minutes’ walk from the cathedral without paying those insane Old Town hotel prices. The building itself is pretty modern, nothing too flashy, but when you walk into the lobby there’s this clean, efficient vibe that just works. Check-in was smooth (always a relief after traveling), and I actually appreciated that the staff seemed to know their stuff about the neighborhood instead of just handing you a generic tourist map.

The room was… well, it’s a Premier Inn, so you know what you’re getting into, but honestly the beds are ridiculously comfortable. Like, I’m talking about the kind of sleep where you actually feel rested in the morning instead of wondering why hotel beds usually feel like medieval torture devices. The shower had proper water pressure – seriously underrated when you’re trudging around cobblestones all day – and everything was spotless. One thing I really liked was how quiet it was at night, which surprised me since you’re still pretty central. I mean, you’ll hear the occasional tram rumbling by, but it’s more of a gentle city hum than anything disruptive. The windows are decent quality, and I’m someone who usually packs earplugs everywhere.

What really sold me on this place though was the location situation. You’re close enough to walk to the cathedral and all the main sights – honestly took me maybe ten minutes to get to the Rhine – but you’re not stuck in that touristy bubble where everything costs twice as much. There’s actually a really good Turkish place just around the corner that locals go to, and a proper German bakery about two blocks away where you can grab breakfast if you don’t want to do the hotel spread. Speaking of which, their breakfast was totally fine, nothing revolutionary but good coffee and fresh bread, which is really all I need to function. Parking was surprisingly manageable too – there’s a garage nearby, and while it’s not free (this is Cologne, after all), it’s not the highway robbery you’d expect in the city center. The whole area feels lived-in rather than just existing for tourists, which I really appreciate. For what you pay and where you are, it’s honestly hard to complain. Would I stay here again? Yeah, definitely.

  Love the option of firm or soft pillows and mattress was amazing. Good shower too. We were on floor 16 which afforded great views.
  
  What could be improved: The aircon was not very powerful so had to keep curtains closed as the sun heated up the room too much.
  The room was very small – too small for 2 people with large suitcases.
  Not a fan of the no housekeeping unless you ask for it the day before prior to noon.

  Central to everything, room was clean and tidy. Beds were comfortable.
  
  What could be improved: One member of staff at checking was very rude and not friendly or helpful. He was not polite at all. However the female on the same shift was very helpful and considerate.
