NH Köln Altstadt Overview

You know what struck me first about the NH Köln Altstadt? It’s actually tucked into this perfectly preserved corner of old Cologne where you can still hear church bells from St. Maria im Kapitol echoing off the cobblestones. The building itself sits right on Holzmarkt – and I mean literally where medieval merchants used to hawk their wares centuries ago. Walking up to check in, you get this weird but wonderful mix of stepping through history while your phone buzzes with modern life.

The lobby honestly feels more like a well-appointed living room than some sterile hotel space. There’s this warm wood paneling that doesn’t scream “corporate chain,” even though NH is definitely a big player. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know Cologne – when I asked about getting to the Romano-Germanic Museum without dealing with tourist crowds, the desk clerk suggested this little route through Heumarkt that locals use. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, nothing groundbreaking but genuinely comfortable. I had a corner room facing the quiet interior courtyard (definitely request this if you’re a light sleeper – Holzmarkt can get a bit lively on weekend evenings). The bathroom was surprisingly spacious, and they’ve got that perfect shower pressure that makes you want to stay in there way too long.

Here’s the thing about this location that makes it special – you’re literally a three-minute walk to Gross St. Martin, but you’re also close enough to Heumarkt that you can grab late-night döner or duck into one of those tiny brauhäuser that tourists never find. I mean, Hanse-Büro is right around the corner, and their himmel un ääd is honestly better than what you’ll get in the touristy spots near the cathedral. The hotel sits in this sweet spot where you feel connected to both medieval Cologne and the living, breathing city. Parking is… well, it’s urban Germany, so expect to pay, but there’s a garage about two blocks away that won’t completely destroy your budget. One small thing – the WiFi can get sluggish during busy periods (I’m guessing when all the business travelers are video calling), but it’s reliable enough for normal use. Overall, this place gets the balance right between being professionally run and feeling like you’re staying somewhere with actual character. At 8.2 rating, people clearly appreciate that sweet spot, and honestly, I get it.

  • Comfy, good value hotel – Simon from United Kingdom – July 25, 2025 (8/10)

Room was comfortable and spacious. Buffet breakfast was very good with lots of variety. Staff very friendly and helpful.

  • Great location – Ivo from Bulgaria – July 21, 2025 (9/10)

Hotel is nice and convenient just a minute from chocolate museum , and walk distance from old town
The hotel offers a fair deal that is to be commended. If you show info that you don't want the daily cleaning , you will get a voucher for a drink at the bar, per person per night. The parking under the bridge is cheap ( less than 6 euro) and is OK. The hotel parking is convenient but expensive, 26 euro per night.

What could be improved: One of the two rooms was very noisy, so was difficult to sleep on open window. The tram from the bridge was the issue. The hotel shall note the people arriving with no German register plate car (rental from other country or own vehicle ) to insure green sticker (is needed for all cars) . If the car is new you can take it from some petrol stations and from special car centers (technical exam points). The offer for breakfast is 25 Euro, that we consider to high.

  • Great location for a city trip. Staff were really friendly and were able to give all rooms on the same floor! – Heath from Belgium – July 20, 2025 (9/10)

Well equipped gym and nice sauna

  • clean nice hotel, not expensive. good breakfast. – Pearljade from United States – July 20, 2025 (9/10)

A little bit further from the central train station. A little bit far from Tram. There are some bus stops nearby. Breakfast good. bed comfortable.

What could be improved: welcome water is a sparkling water. It will be nice if it was still water. But, you can not complain over something free! And 20 minutes walk from train station (train 132 and 133 was on detour due to construction from the train station).

  • Very good cost benefit – Robson from Netherlands – July 3, 2025 (9/10)

Location is very good. This very near to the best city attractions. Very good cost benefit.

What could be improved: Parking has no enough space for all guests. If you go by car, can have difficult to park.

  • Wonderful – Andrew from United Kingdom – June 9, 2025 (9/10)

Nice friendly staff and the hotel is in an excellent location.

What could be improved: Price of the drinks in the reception. €4 for a bottle of water is outrageous.

  • Nice place and good staff – Busby from United Kingdom – June 1, 2025 (9/10)

Location, style and service was all very good

What could be improved: Bed was slightly firm but that’s only personal preference
