Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw “Modernes Apartement am Rhein” pop up in my search results, I almost scrolled past it. The name sounds a bit corporate, you know? But man, I’m glad I didn’t because this place turned out to be exactly what I needed after bouncing between cramped hotel rooms in central Cologne.

The thing about Flittard is that most tourists have never heard of it, which is actually perfect. You’re still technically in Cologne – it’s not like you’re stuck out in the middle of nowhere – but Paulinenhofstraße feels worlds away from the tourist chaos around the cathedral. I mean, you can literally walk to the Rhine in about three minutes, and there’s this lovely stretch where locals go for evening strolls that hardly any visitors know about. The apartment itself lives up to that “modern” promise without being sterile, if that makes sense. Clean lines, decent Wi-Fi (I was working remotely), and honestly the kind of functional setup that makes you wonder why more places don’t just keep things simple and do them well.

What really sold me on the location was discovering that little bakery on the corner – I think it’s called Bäckerei Schmidt or something similar – where the owner clearly remembers regulars and actually chats with you in broken English if your German is as rusty as mine. Plus, you’ve got the U-Bahn connection that gets you into the city center in maybe 20 minutes, but when you come back at night, you’re not dealing with drunk tourists stumbling around outside your window. The apartment stays surprisingly quiet, even though you’re not far from the main road. I was there in late spring and could leave the windows open without being woken up by traffic, which… well, anyone who’s tried to sleep in Cologne’s Altstadt knows how rare that is. The only minor thing I’d mention is that check-in was a bit more complicated than expected – you know how some places make you coordinate with the owner directly rather than having a front desk – but once that was sorted, everything ran smoothly. The rating of 9 honestly feels about right; it’s not luxury by any stretch, but it delivers on what it promises and then some.

  Уютная чистая квартира в тихом районе, всегда можно найти место для парковки. Рядом пекарня, магазин и остановка общественного транспорта. До собора Кёльна примерно 30 минут езды, очень классная транспортная доступность, так что мы ездили на общественном транспорте, хотя приехали на машине.
  
  Полностью бесконтактное заселение / отъезд.

  Perfect for two, in a quiet but slightly out-of-the-way neighborhood, comfortable, with excellent amenities—nothing was missing except maybe a broom (honestly the only downside), but otherwise everything was great!

  A small, but nice flat. Many small pleasant things which make you stay comfortable. Like coffee capsules and shampoo. The check in and out can be done by yourself without meeting with the host. It’s easy to park the car and to go to the city center by bus.

  The apartment is spotlessly clean, the bathroom is lovely, and the shower is amazing. There is plenty of storage for hanging up your clothes, the bed clothes are of really good quality and there is a lovely fresh fragrance when you walk in.
  We loved that there was a kitchenette, 2 hobs, a microwave, a fridge, and all the pots and pans that you need.
  The apartment seems to be in the suburbs of Cologne, with fantastic scenery. At the top of the road is the 152 bus that's brings you to the Tram services. (Download the KVB app for your 24hr or 48hr bus and tram ticket). We had a lovely time and can't wait to return.
  
  We did have an issue and locked ourselves out by mistake, and we contacted Laura, the owner, and she responded quick and had the problem solved in no time! Fantastic service.
  
  What could be improved: It's not a dislike just a personal preference, but the curtains in the bedroom area are a little lite, so light gets in in the morning. They are white and add to the clean, crisp look of the apartment. I love a really dark room. I was still able to sleep and have a great lie on as the bed is very comfortable.
