But man, I’m glad I didn’t. The May-Apartment sits in this quiet corner of Bickendorf that most tourists completely miss, which is actually perfect if you want to experience Cologne without the constant hum of tour groups.

The thing that struck me first was how surprisingly spacious everything felt. You know how most European city apartments make you feel like you’re playing Tetris with your luggage? Not here. The owners clearly thought about what actual travelers need – there’s proper counter space in the kitchen (I mean, where else are you going to spread out all those German pastries you bought?), and the living area doesn’t feel cramped even when you’ve got two people sprawled out planning the next day’s adventures. The whole place has this clean, modern vibe but without that sterile hotel chain feeling. And the bed… well, let’s just say I had to drag myself out of it each morning, which is saying something when there’s a whole city to explore outside.

What I really appreciated was the neighborhood itself – Bickendorf has this authentic, lived-in feel that you just don’t get staying near the cathedral. There’s a fantastic bakery about two minutes walk away (follow your nose, you can’t miss it), and the locals at the corner café actually seemed happy to chat rather than just tolerating another tourist. Getting into the city center is dead simple – the public transport connections are solid, though I ended up walking more often than not because the route along the Rhine is just too good to pass up. Parking was way easier than I expected too, which saved me the usual city center headaches. The only tiny complaint I’d have is that the shower pressure could be a bit stronger, but honestly, after a long day wandering around the old town, I was usually too tired to care. The 9.1 rating makes total sense – it’s one of those places that just works without any fuss, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

  Cleanliness, the apartment itself how old it was. The proximity tot the metro and that it had a little garden in the back. Also the water and biscuits that were provided were a very nice addition. The owner giving us tips of what Christmas market to go to was also amazing
  
  What could be improved: The shower and the especially the shower curtain, it was very clean but a wet cold piece of fabric is not my thing.

  The apartment was well furnished and the hosts were wonderful. They provided us with some great local restaurant recommendations and information about which Christmas markets to visit. My husband and I want to visit Cologne again and we plan to come back to this apartment.

  Heel fijn bed, ruime regen douche, fijn klein keukentje met meer mogelijkheden dan wij samen nodig hadden. De map met tips over de omgeving heeft ons goed op weg geholpen in bickendorf.

  Eine kleine, aber sehr gemütlich eingerichtete Wohnung. Alles sauber und in top Zustand. Unter den drei Bratpfannen fand sich sogar eine, die für den Induktionsherd geeignet war. 🙂
  
  Die Lage ist sehr gut: in unmittelbarer Nähe befinden sich mehrere Geschäft, auch zum öffentlichen Verkehr sind es nur paar Minuten.
  
  What could be improved: Beim Verlassen der Wohnung müssen neben der eigenen Wohnungstür noch zwei weitere Türen auf- und wieder abgeschlossen werden.
  
  Rolladen gibt es keine, sondern nur kaum effektive Verdunkelung. Es wird also schon früh sehr hell im Zimmer.
  
  Das WLAN war während meines Aufenthaltes nicht ganz zuverlässig. Am ersten Abend gab es mehrere DSL-Unterbrechungen, am zweiten Abend war ab 22 Uhr das Funknetz plötzlich weg und kam erst am nächsten Morgen wieder. Ist aber möglicherweise kein Normalzustand, sondern bloß mein Pech.
  
  Der gute Eindruck von der Wohnung wurde auch durch eine ärgerliche Fehlkommunikation getrübt. Normalerweise wird der Code für die Schlüsselbox am Tag vorher über Booking kommuniziert. Stattdessen habe ich hier am Tag der Anreise die Nachricht erhalten, ich möge eine Mobilfunknummer angeben, damit der Code per SMS kommt. Als ich vor der Haustür stand, habe ich den Code immer noch nicht bekommen, und die Vermieterin war telefonisch nicht erreichbar. Schließlich habe ich geklingelt, die Schwester (?) der Vermieterin hat mir aufgemacht. Diese wollte mir zunächst weismachen, es sei unmöglich, dass ich den Code nicht erhalten habe. Jedenfalls kam die SMS nie an (angeblich kam sie nicht durch, meine Mobilfunknummer war aber richtig angegeben). Stattdessen wurde mir der Code per Booking-Nachricht zugeschickt – aber erst, als ich bereits vorm Haus war.
