Mauritius Hotel & Therme Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Mauritius Hotel & Therme on Mauritiuskirchplatz, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical chain hotel. The building sits right in the heart of Cologne’s Altstadt-Süd, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. This four-star property has that solid, established feel — not flashy, but you know it’s been doing things right for a while. The fact that they have more repeat guests than most other hotels in the area tells you something about what to expect. It’s the kind of place where consistency matters more than grand gestures.

The Neighborhood Advantage

Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re actually in the best-rated area of Cologne, which means everything feels walkable and authentic. The Altstadt-Süd district puts you close enough to the major sights without being stuck in tourist central. Couples seem to get this particularly well, rating the location 8.3, and I can see why. You can wander the old streets in the evening, duck into local spots for dinner, and still feel like you’re experiencing the real city rather than just passing through it. The neighborhood rewards exploration at every turn.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was comfortable without trying too hard to impress — clean lines, decent space, and everything you need without unnecessary frills. What struck me was how quiet it was, considering you’re right in the city center. The windows are well-insulated, and you actually get a good night’s sleep. The therme aspect of the hotel adds a nice touch too — having access to thermal facilities after a day of walking around Cologne feels like a special amenity that most hotels in this price range don’t offer. It’s a thoughtful addition that enhances your stay considerably.

Morning Fuel

Breakfast here is one of those buffet setups that actually works well. They’ve got continental options, vegetarian choices, and enough variety that you won’t get bored if you’re staying multiple nights. I mean, it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s substantial and fresh, and the restaurant area has a pleasant atmosphere in the morning. You can fuel up properly before heading out to explore, which honestly makes a bigger difference to your day than you might think. The quality and presentation show real attention to detail.

Why Guests Love It

The thing about Mauritius Hotel & Therme is that it delivers on the fundamentals really well. You’re getting solid value in an excellent location, with the bonus of thermal facilities and a property that clearly knows how to take care of its guests. The 7.6 rating reflects exactly what this place is — reliable, well-positioned, and thoughtfully run. It’s the kind of hotel where you check in, settle into the neighborhood rhythm, and just enjoy being in Cologne without any accommodation drama getting in the way. That’s exactly what travelers should expect from a four-star property.

Reviews of Mauritius Hotel & Therme

  • Very Good – Peter from United Kingdom – July 24, 2025 (8/10)

Good size room and comfortable bed

  • Great location and good comfort. – Carsten from Denmark – July 21, 2025 (8/10)

Within walking distance from city center, Rhine and good neighborhood for dining out. Nice view from roof top bar.

What could be improved: There should have been time periods for entering baths/pools nude so the family audience with teenagers can enter without to much embarrashment. Also people sunbathing nude at roof top, maybe there could have been screens to separate area for that?

  • the lady staff are very friendly but one particular guy was really rude and made me feel uncomfortable every time I spo – Melissa from Portugal – July 8, 2025 (7/10)

The Spa's amazing but take notes it's a nudist spa 🙈

What could be improved: The rooms were very spacious and comfortable

  • Good – Tryggvi from Iceland – June 21, 2025 (7/10)

The Spa and the cleanness. Rooms were also comfortable

What could be improved: The fact that our room was not in the same location as the lobby.

  • Hotel room was nice and central. – Van from United Kingdom – June 10, 2025 (7/10)

    Nice, clean, central.

What could be improved: Couldn’t use the pool as children weren’t allowed, which wasn’t listed on booking description.

  • Nice for an evening or two. – Katie from United Kingdom – May 27, 2025 (7/10)

The spa was a nice touch albeit not very comfortable with being completely naked in one with my 13 year old daughter so we didn't stay too long. The hotel was in a perfect location.

What could be improved: The staff in the restaurant that is by the spa were so unhelpful and just could not be bothered to serve us. Went in for some food and was told they were not serving food even though all the menus were out on table and bar.

  • Relaxing spa – Daniel from United Kingdom – March 14, 2025 (8/10)

The spa part of the hotel was excellent. Great conditions. I do think it should be made clear to non-germans that there is no “swimming pool” as in a rectangle to get a good swimming workout in. Booking.com says it has a pool

What could be improved: The hotel was extremely dated. I had no bed sheet just a duvet. No swimming pool to workout in.

  • Saunas are great but you have to pay extra to use them – Orlando from Netherlands – February 21, 2025 (9/10)

    The saunas are great

What could be improved: You have to pay extra for using the sauna and towels

  • Overall very good, but a few minor issues. – Stephen from United Kingdom – January 29, 2025 (7/10)

The spa was lovey and clean. Nice to have a choice of Sauna's and swimming pools. Bed was lovely though and I slept well.
    Reception staff were very helpful

What could be improved: My deluxe room, the mini bar was off and the tea/coffee supply very poor. Considering this was a deluxe room, I was disappointed with this. No milk either and not even a small biscuit. Bed was lovely though and I slept well. The room with all the lights on was very dark. One light did not work.

  • comfortable, calming, low-key experience. – Steve from United Kingdom – January 28, 2025 (8/10)

well kept, back-street spa hotel with copious facilities for treatments. Good breakfast, comfortable rooms and only a short walk to shops, restaurants etc.

What could be improved: I alerted the staff to my need for a nearby parking space, due to a recent hospital stay. They provided one, but the access is remarkably difficult. While the room and the facilities were accessible for disabled guests, I would have to strike a note of warning about the parking. The ramp is steep and there is no separate access on foot. I'd say it was OK so long as your driver is not also your disabled party member.
