Madame Tower Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Madame Tower? The name makes it sound way more mysterious than it actually is – it’s honestly just a solid, no-nonsense hotel tucked right into the Altstadt-Süd, which if you haven’t been to Cologne yet, is basically the old town area south of the cathedral. I mean, you’re literally a ten-minute walk from the Dom, and the location on Mauritiussteinweg puts you right in the thick of things without being on one of those crazy tourist-packed streets where you can’t sleep because of drunk groups stumbling around at 2 AM.
The thing about this place is it feels authentically German in a way that’s hard to explain – like, the breakfast includes proper dark breads and local cheeses, not some international buffet nonsense, and the staff actually knows the neighborhood well enough to tell you which U-Bahn entrance is closest (it’s Severinstraße, by the way). The rooms are pretty typical for a three-star spot – clean, functional, nothing fancy but everything works. I stayed on the third floor and honestly, the traffic noise wasn’t bad at all, though you might want to pack earplugs if you’re a super light sleeper. What I really appreciated was how they handle check-in – none of that rushed feeling you get at bigger hotels, and they’re genuinely helpful about storing luggage if you arrive early.
Here’s the real deal though: this isn’t going to wow you with marble lobbies or rooftop bars, but it gets the fundamentals right in a way that matters when you’re actually traveling. The location means you can walk to the chocolate museum (seriously, don’t skip it), you’re close enough to the Rhine for evening strolls, and there are actual neighborhood restaurants nearby – not just tourist traps. I found this great little Brauhaus called Peters that locals recommended, just a few blocks away. The 7.4 rating makes sense to me because it’s exactly what it promises to be: a decent place to sleep in a genuinely good location, run by people who seem to care about doing their job well. If you’re the type who needs a spa and concierge service, look elsewhere, but if you want to stay somewhere that feels like part of Cologne rather than a generic hotel that could be anywhere, Madame Tower actually delivers on that front.
Best hotels in Cologne range from charming boutique properties near the historic cathedral to elegant riverside hotels with stunning views of the Rhine and medieval old town.

Reviews of Madame Tower
Good place – central to all things bus metro and tram besides great restaurants . – Kgs from United States – June 30, 2025 (8/10)
The instructions should be updated. First time you need someone to open the door that is locked so you can go 10th floor to access the key box with code.
What could be improved: Fans should be big size for use in summer.
Kitchen didn’t have right size of vessels for induction stove.Very Good – Jack from Isle of Man – June 7, 2025 (8/10)
It was a great apartment and although its slightly out of the city centre it is close to a lidl, aldi and has plenty of shops nearby.
What could be improved: The shower could be better as the water pressure meant that there was next to no water after 10ish minutes.I highly recommand the appartments – Sylvestre from Belgium – May 10, 2025 (8/10)
I liked everything really. Near to everything like restaurant, shops, touristique areas.

Location and secure parking
What could be improved: NothingGreat location, sub par equipment. – Isabella from France – May 20, 2024 (6/10)
Great location, walkable from the city centre. Host was very communicative and nice.
What could be improved: Fridge wasn’t cold enough. Water wasn’t cold enough. Missing utensils such as a bottle opener. Water pressure in the shower was awful. Sofa bed is broken (missing screws). Cupboard under the window also broken (I have seen reviews from 2 years ago also saying this and it has still not been fixed). Missing some key information before check in but when I contacted the hosts they were very nice and helpful. Not enough pillows.Mediocre at best – Ivar from Denmark – April 19, 2024 (6/10)
Big room
What could be improved: Shower had no pressure, windows are not isolated, key system is just annoying. And i had problem returning keys, as the keybox where they asked to leave them was already full of keys and it took me 10 min to manage closing it with all the keys insude…Location makes this place ideal. More cockware is needed given that this is marketed as an Appartement. – Astrit from United Kingdom – December 24, 2022 (8/10)
