Low Budget Apartment Cologne Overview
Look, I’ll be straight with you about the Low Budget Apartment Cologne – the name pretty much tells you what you’re getting, and honestly, that’s not a bad thing. When I first pulled up to Burgstraße 112 in Höhenberg, I wasn’t expecting much from the exterior (it’s a pretty typical residential German building), but inside it’s actually quite decent for what you pay. The whole place has this no-nonsense vibe that I sort of appreciated – clean, functional, and surprisingly quiet given that you’re still technically in Cologne.
Höhenberg isn’t exactly the postcard part of the city, but here’s what most visitors don’t realize: you’re actually in a pretty authentic neighborhood where real Cologne residents live. There’s a decent Turkish bakery just down the street that does amazing börek in the mornings, and the S-Bahn connection from nearby Trimbornstraße gets you into the city center in about fifteen minutes – which is honestly faster than some of the “centrally located” places I’ve stayed that are buried in pedestrian zones. The apartment itself feels more like crashing at a friend’s place than staying in a sterile hotel room. I mean, don’t expect luxury linens or fancy toiletries, but the kitchen actually has proper pots and pans (not just a sad little kettle), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without living out of a suitcase. The Wi-Fi works fine, the heating keeps things comfortable during those damp Cologne winters, and – this might sound weird but it matters – the shower has decent water pressure.
What really won me over was how quiet it gets at night. Burgstraße has some traffic during the day, sure, but it’s nothing like staying near the Hauptbahnhof where you hear sirens and drunk tourists until 3 AM. You know what else? The whole check-in process was refreshingly simple – none of that formal hotel reception desk drama, just straightforward communication and keys that actually work the first time. The 7.7 rating makes total sense to me because it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. You’re not paying for marble bathrooms or a concierge, you’re paying for a clean, comfortable base in a city that can get pretty expensive. If you’re the type who spends most of your time exploring the city anyway and just needs a reliable place to sleep and maybe cook a simple meal, this works really well. Plus, there’s usually street parking available (which is kind of a miracle in German cities), and you’re close enough to the real Cologne that you can grab groceries at normal prices instead of tourist-trap convenience stores.

What could be improved: Kleiderhacken wären im Bad schön, Sauberkeit im TK-Fach.Exceptional – Eric from France – February 26, 2025 (10/10)
