Leonardo Hotel Köln Bonn Airport Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Leonardo Hotel Köln Bonn Airport on Waldstr., I wasn’t expecting much. Airport hotels have this reputation for being soulless pit stops, you know? But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible.
The thing is, it’s tucked away in Grengel, which means you’re not dealing with the chaos of central Cologne but you’re still only about 20 minutes from the city center when traffic’s decent. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – I mean, yeah, you’ll hear the occasional plane, but it’s not the constant roar I was dreading. The building itself has this clean, modern vibe without feeling sterile, and honestly, the lobby smells fantastic (I think they pump some subtle vanilla scent through the air system). Check-in was refreshingly quick – the staff actually seemed to know what they were doing, which sadly isn’t always a given at airport properties.
Here’s what really won me over though: the rooms are genuinely comfortable, not just “airport hotel comfortable.” The beds are firm but not rock-hard, and they’ve got these blackout curtains that actually work – crucial if you’re dealing with jet lag or early flights. The bathrooms are spotless with decent water pressure, and there’s enough space to properly unpack if you’re staying more than one night. I stayed during a busy conference season in Cologne, and while the hotel was packed, it never felt chaotic or understaffed. The restaurant serves solid German fare (their schnitzel is legitimately good), and the bar stays open late enough to grab a nightcap without feeling rushed.
What struck me most was how they’ve managed to balance being an airport hotel with actually feeling like a proper place to stay. You’ve got business travelers mixing with families heading off on vacation, but somehow it works. The WiFi is fast, there’s plenty of parking (and it’s free, which is practically unheard of in this part of Germany), and if you need to catch an early flight, the shuttle service runs frequently and the drivers know every shortcut to avoid morning traffic. I wouldn’t necessarily choose to spend a week here, but for what it is – a 4-star airport hotel that takes itself seriously – it delivers way more than you’d expect. Plus, that 8.2 rating isn’t just inflated review padding; people genuinely seem to leave here satisfied rather than just relieved their flight connection worked out.

I had a good restful night in a beautiful spacious room. There was a large bottom water in the room. The location was ex – Stephen from Ireland – July 25, 2025 (9/10)
Its location near the airport. The attention to detail: bottles of water in the room. We had to be at the airport by 5.30am. There was a self service area where there was tea, coffee & croissants before we left the airport. This was in marked contrast to another nearby hotel where we stayed last year.
What could be improved: NothingA helpful overnight pre-flight – Kirsten from Thailand – July 22, 2025 (8/10)
The airport shuttle is really handy, it goes often and it is included in the price. The restaurant staff are very pleasant and friendly, The reception staff are very helpful with information. The rooms are comfy and have space in them.
What could be improved: The communication in advance . I specifically asked about a late check out. Twice. I asked again on arrival. They had to check. I ended up paying an extra fee which I didn't mind. But then I had housekeeping at my door for regular checking out time. That wasn't great on their systemsVery Good – Atavalpe from Latvia – July 9, 2025 (8/10)
Good breakfast sortiment. Locayion close to airport, walking distance.
What could be improved: Lacking light in the room even with all of the lamps on.Very pleasant stay – Jennifer from Netherlands – July 8, 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: Expensive for locationgreat hotel with good location and pretty good breakfast – Vladyslav from Ukraine – July 6, 2025 (9/10)
very clean and tidy room with good sound insulation
What could be improved: the transfer that was supposed to pick us up from the airport never arrived. the girl who spoke to us on the phone was rude. although we came to the pick-up point that the girl said, no one ever arrived. repeated calls were answered with dissatisfaction. in the end, we took a regular taxiWonderful – Nils from Ireland – July 2, 2025 (9/10)
Very comfortable bed, spacious room.
Reliable airport shuttle.
What could be improved: Reception couldn't find booking at first. Took 10mins longer then it should.
Design flaw in bathroom. Turning on water in sink missed basin when on low pressure, instead risking flooding the bathroom.
No central light switch.
