Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the ibis Köln Centrum on Neue Weyerstr, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s tucked into this narrow street in Altstadt-Süd, and from the outside it looks pretty standard for an ibis. But you know what? Sometimes that predictable reliability is exactly what you need when you’re exploring a city like Cologne.

The location is actually pretty sweet once you get your bearings. You’re basically in the heart of the old town, which means you can stumble to the cathedral in about ten minutes – and I mean stumble, because there are some great brewhouses within walking distance. The Heumarkt is right around the corner, and honestly, that’s where the real Cologne happens. Morning coffee at one of the cafés there, then you’re perfectly positioned to either head toward the Rhine or dive deeper into the Altstadt. The street itself is quiet enough that you won’t get woken up by traffic, but busy enough that you feel safe walking back at night.

Inside, it’s classic ibis – clean, functional, no surprises. The rooms are compact but well thought out, and the beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about this stuff). The shower has decent pressure, which you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case in European city hotels. What I really appreciated was how quickly the staff sorted out my early check-in request – they didn’t make a big deal about it, just made it happen. The breakfast is standard continental fare, nothing fancy, but the coffee machine actually makes decent coffee and there’s enough variety to fuel your sightseeing. I mean, you’re not staying here for a culinary experience anyway.

Here’s what sold me on the place though – the elevator conversation I overheard between two business travelers who’d been staying here for years. They were talking about how it’s their go-to spot because it’s reliable, well-connected, and the staff remembers them. That kind of repeat business tells you something. Plus, the tram connections are excellent from here. You can get to the main train station in no time, or hop over to the museum quarter without dealing with the tourist crowds around the Dom.

The 7.3 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be boutique or luxury, it’s just doing the fundamentals really well. Some people might find it a bit sterile, and fair enough, the décor isn’t going to win any awards. But when you’re spending your days wandering through Cologne’s incredible churches, poking around the chocolate museum, or day-tripping to Bonn, you want a place that’s comfortable and doesn’t eat up half your travel budget. This delivers on that promise without any drama.
