Hotel zur Malzmühle Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel zur Malzmühle? Walking into what feels like someone’s quirky great-aunt’s house – if your great-aunt happened to own a beautifully preserved 19th-century building right on Heumarkt. I mean, this isn’t your typical sterile hotel experience. The moment you step inside, there’s this wonderfully lived-in feeling, with creaky wooden floors that actually tell a story and these charmingly mismatched antique pieces scattered throughout the lobby.
The location is honestly unbeatable if you want to feel like you’re living in old Cologne rather than just visiting it. You’re literally steps from the Rhine (I could hear the occasional river traffic from my third-floor room – not bothersome, just… present), and the whole Altstadt-Nord area unfolds right outside your door. What I loved is that you can walk to the cathedral in about eight minutes without dealing with any of the tourist trap stuff along the way. The breakfast room overlooks this lovely courtyard area where locals actually cut through during their morning routines – it feels authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find.
Now, it’s a 3-star place, so don’t expect marble bathrooms or turndown service, but honestly? That 8.2 rating makes perfect sense once you spend a night here. The rooms are clean and comfortable in that European way where everything serves a purpose without unnecessary frills. My room had this enormous wooden wardrobe that probably weighs more than my car, and the bed was surprisingly comfortable – firm but not punishing. The staff genuinely seems to care about the place, especially this older gentleman at the front desk who gave me the most detailed walking directions to the Wallraf-Richartz Museum I’ve ever received. Parking can be tricky (there’s a small lot, but book ahead), though the nearby Heumarkt area has decent street parking if you don’t mind a short walk. What really won me over was how the hotel feels connected to its neighborhood – you’ll see the same faces at the corner bakery, hear church bells marking the hours, and actually experience Cologne’s rhythm rather than being insulated from it in some glass tower.

Very Good – Dennis from United Kingdom – July 10, 2025 (8/10)
Location. Liked being in the same building as the restaurant.
What could be improved: No issues with the property. Very goodVery Good – 米卡mika from China – July 8, 2025 (8/10)
The breakfast was decent; the location is excellent — very close to both the bus and tram stations. It’s also within walking distance to the Cologne Dom. The staff here are incredibly helpful, and the hotel room is clean, tidy, and comfortable to stay in.
Great location for seeing Köln – Neil from United Kingdom – June 22, 2025 (9/10)
Location superb and has a lovely authentic bar/restaurant on site
What could be improved: Nothing really not to likeWonderful – Angela from United Kingdom – June 18, 2025 (9/10)
Near the train station (10 min walk)
Lovely modern room.
Very comfy bed.
Bars and restaurants nearby.
We were given a token each for a free beer in the bar next door.
Beer tap in the room which you can get them to supply with beer for a fee.( we had only 2 nights there so didn't use)
We paid for breakfast 1 day and it was nice, good selection of food
What could be improved: Curtains were light and it was just a light blind at sink window so the light woke us early.Brilliant place for a City break – Trevor from United Kingdom – June 17, 2025 (9/10)
The rooms was fresh, clean and well laid out for our purposes. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. They all spoke very good English too, which helped us as my German isn't very good, although I do speak a little.
Location wise, it's above a bar/restaurant/brewery and near to some busy junctions and public transport hub for bus and tram, so don't expect it to be quiet. That said, it was all "happy" noises with people enjoying themselves laughing and chatting in the bar. There are a number of useful places very nearby – a selection of cafes/restaurants, a couple of local shops and a very good Ice Cream place. Access to transport couldn't be easier as it's mostly just over the road. It's a 10-15 min walk from the main station (or 3 stops on a no 5 Ubahn with a 3 min walk to the hotel once you get off). Heumarkt is just beyond the public transport hub and has many very good eateries. Overall, it's a lovely location to use as a base to get around.
What could be improved: There really wasn't much not to like.
We had one tiny problem while we were there, which we just put down to a misunderstanding due to language. We hadn't booked any breakfasts before arrival as we wanted to see what was in the area before committing. For day 2 onwards we decided to breakfast at the hotel (for convenience as we were out and about fairly early to do all the touristy things). We ordered and paid for breakfast for the rest of the duration of our stay. What we didn't know (and wasn't pointed out when we booked) was that breakfasts aren't available on Mondays. Monday being our last day, a breakfast before departing the hotel would have been much easier for us.
The lovely chap on reception made a few recommendations for places nearby that were excellent and we were fully refunded for the missing meal when we checked out. As I mentioned above though, I believe it was a communication error due to language and not something to be held against the hotel in any way – more a case to be aware that they don't offer breakfast on Mondays.Very Good – Christopher from United Kingdom – June 12, 2025 (8/10)
I’ve stayed here many times in the past and the standard is always good. Breakfast was great and thank your for making me bacon!
What could be improved: Sadly some of the little things that were thrown in are eroding – the green token for a complementary beer for example or the complementary bottle of water.Excellent location, nice clean cozy rooms, nice helpful staff – Jeevan from United Arab Emirates – June 8, 2025 (9/10)
Excellent location and very easy to walk to all the main attractions in Cologne. The staff were very pleasant and even gave us some complimentary beer coupons. The rooms were cozy, well-designed (maybe renovated), and well-lit, with large windows. Some reviews complained about noise from the bars below, but we stayed on the weekend when the bars were full, and we were not disturbed at all.
What could be improved: They don't change the room sheets and towels daily, due to their sustainability initiatives. If you do want it, you have to ask for it. It didn't bother us, so we didn't ask. Not really a negative, but it's essential to know.
It would be nice if they had a fridge.Very Good – Francesca from Italy – May 31, 2025 (8/10)
everything perfect
What could be improved: transparent shower pretty much in the middle of the roomQuiet, clean and comfortable – De_kuijp from Netherlands – May 14, 2025 (9/10)
Friendly personnel. Extremely clean comfortable room, looked like new. Walking distance from shopping centre, restaurants and Bahnhof. And looking at the Kölner Dome in the distance and below a busy street the room was completely quiet.
Good – Niall from United Kingdom – April 15, 2025 (7/10)
The location is perfect. Hotel is quiet. Staff are friendly.
What could be improved: No fridge in the room and no telephone to call reception
