Hotel Stadtpalais Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Hotel Stadtpalais on Deutz-Kalker-Straße, I wasn’t expecting much. The Deutz district isn’t exactly where most tourists plant themselves, but you know what? That turned out to be exactly why this place works so well. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Deutz-Kalker-Straße station, which means you can hop the S-Bahn and be in the heart of Cologne’s old town in about five minutes. No dealing with the tourist crowds right outside your door, but still close enough that you’re not commuting to everything.
The hotel itself has this quietly elegant thing going on – not flashy, just well put together. The lobby actually smells like good coffee instead of that generic hotel air freshener, and the staff seem to genuinely know what they’re talking about when you ask for recommendations. I mean, the front desk guy told me about this little bakery around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – clean, comfortable beds, decent-sized bathrooms with rainfall showers that actually have good water pressure. The windows are well-sealed too, which matters because even though Deutz is quieter than the main city center, you’re still dealing with urban sounds. I stayed on the fourth floor facing the courtyard and slept like a rock.
What really sold me on this place, though, was the location strategy. You’re positioned perfectly between the Rhine and the autobahn, so if you’re planning day trips (and honestly, you should – the drive to Bonn or up to Düsseldorf is gorgeous), you’re not fighting through city traffic to get anywhere. But when you want to explore Cologne proper, just walk down to the waterfront and cross the Deutzer Brücke on foot – gives you this incredible view of the cathedral that most people miss because they’re taking the train or driving. The walk takes maybe fifteen minutes, and you pass through some neighborhoods that feel actually German, not tourist-Germany. There’s a decent restaurant scene developing in Deutz too, especially along the Rhine promenade. Nothing too fancy, but good solid food and local beer without the old town markup. Parking is included, which – if you’ve ever tried to park anywhere near Cologne’s center – you’ll appreciate. The breakfast spread is pretty comprehensive, and they keep it stocked well into the late morning, so you don’t have to rush downstairs at 7 AM to get decent coffee and fresh rolls.

What could be improved: NothingBrilliant! – Richard from United Kingdom – July 10, 2025 (10/10)
The refurbished elements of the original building are really well done, capturing so many of the original features. Our bedroom and its facilities really suited our needs. The breakfasts were amazing. The hotel is in the Deutz area of the city, just the other side of the river from the centre. Had it not have been so hot, we more than likely would have walked to and fro as it's quite walkable. However, the U-bahn/tram system was so handy we just used that.
What could be improved: There was nothing we didn't like!Wonderful – Paulius from Lithuania – June 26, 2025 (9/10)

Location is perfect if you’re going to an event at the Lanxess Arena since it’s literally across the street.

Room was very nice with a comfortable bed. The A/C control was easy to use for adjusting the temperature. Bathroom shower was excellent.
What could be improved: Distance to the Cologne old town was just within walking distance. Good for exercise, but might be a little far for some.Exceptional – Daniela from Austria – May 31, 2025 (10/10)
The rooms are beautiful, the breakfast is great and the location is perfect if you're going to a concert at the Lanxess Arena.
