Hotel Sion Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Sion? Walking down Kleine Budengasse, you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking – it’s tucked into this narrow cobblestone street in the heart of Cologne’s old town, but once you’re inside, it feels way more spacious than the building suggests from outside. I mean, three stars doesn’t sound like much on paper, but honestly, this place punches above its weight class.
The thing about staying right in Altstadt-Nord is that you’re literally surrounded by centuries of history, and Hotel Sion gets that balance right between being authentically old-world without feeling stuffy. The rooms are clean and comfortable (nothing fancy, but you’re not paying fancy prices either), and here’s what I really appreciated – the windows actually open, which is surprisingly rare these days. You’ll hear some street noise in the morning since it’s a pedestrian area with cafes opening up, but it’s more charming than annoying, sort of like having the city gently wake you up. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood too, not just the tourist spots everyone recommends. They pointed me toward this little bakery around the corner on Unter Goldschmied that I never would’ve found otherwise.
What really sells this place for me is the location – and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” way that every hotel claims. You’re a five-minute walk from the cathedral (you can actually see the spires from some of the upper floor windows), but more importantly, you’re in the thick of where locals actually go. There’s this whole network of little streets and squares around the hotel where you’ll find proper German pubs and family-run restaurants that have been there for decades. Parking is basically impossible right at the hotel, but there’s a garage about ten minutes away if you’re driving – though honestly, once you’re here, you won’t need a car for anything. The trams run constantly, and you can walk to most of what you’d want to see. I stayed here during carnival season and it was absolutely perfect – close enough to join the madness on the main squares, but quiet enough that you could escape back to your room when you needed a break. For the price point and that 8/10 rating, Hotel Sion delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense.

Great room and hotel (but a bit tight) – Philippe from Canada – August 2, 2025 (9/10)
The people at the reception were great, the room was clean, air conditioning working fine (just like everything else), wifi great, bed really comfortable (one of the best I've slept in in hotels), breakfast was good, also great location
What could be improved: If the room had been a little bigger, it would have been a 10 probably, but It was tight I must say (even without the luggage). Its probably the only negative pointGreat location to stay – Jacob from Mexico – July 23, 2025 (8/10)

Location and clean
What could be improved: Banged my head on the sloped roof beam 🙁
We were on the 4th floor and the elevator only went to the 3rd floor. Not a deal breaker though. Our stay was too short. We loved the location and everything was comfortable. – Nina from United States – June 25, 2025 (9/10)
Location was exceptional. Also enjoyed having breakfast buffet on site.
What could be improved: Rooms were a bit small to lay out our bags but otherwise fine.Very Good – Stephen from Hong Kong – June 17, 2025 (8/10)
I had booked 2 rooms and my travelling companion could not come. There was no refund despite plenty of notice (bad). However the hotel did book one night for the second room and in a display of honesty and integrity they will refund me that night.
