Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Hotel Ilbertz Garni on Mindener Straße, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place in Deutz. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming spots surprise you the most. This little family-run hotel sits quietly in a residential stretch, and while it’s not going to blow you away with marble lobbies or rooftop pools, it’s got that authentic German hospitality thing down pat.

The whole “garni” designation means it’s breakfast-only, which actually works perfectly if you’re planning to explore Cologne properly. You’re literally a 5-minute walk to Deutzer Brücke, and honestly, crossing that bridge into the old town each morning became my favorite part of the routine. The rooms are – well, they’re exactly what you’d expect from a solid German guesthouse. Clean, functional, with those heavy European duvets that either make you claustrophobic or feel wonderfully cocooned (I’m in the latter camp). The bathrooms are small but everything works, and the water pressure is surprisingly decent for an older building.

What really won me over was the breakfast situation – they set up this proper German spread with fresh bread, local cheeses, and actual good coffee, not the watery stuff you get at chain hotels. The owner, Herr Ilbertz, usually makes the rounds in the morning, and he’s one of those locals who genuinely knows the city inside and out. He steered me away from the tourist traps near the cathedral and pointed me toward this incredible brauhau in Deutz that I never would’ve found otherwise. The neighborhood itself is pretty quiet – you’re away from the chaos of the Innenstadt but close enough that you can walk to everything that matters. I mean, you can see the cathedral spires from some of the upper floor windows, which is sort of magical when you’re having your morning coffee. Parking is actually manageable here (unlike in the city center), and the whole area feels more like real Cologne rather than tourist Cologne, if that makes sense. The 8.1 rating seems about right – it’s not luxury, but it’s thoughtful and genuine in a way that makes you want to come back.

  It was very cosy and felt very homely. The staff were lovely and the room was very clean and had everything we needed. We felt very safe and happy here and the beds were very comfortable! We really enjoyed our stay in such an authentic hotel and will definitely be back!
  
  What could be improved: Due to the bundling being quite old the lift was very small so we struggled to fit two people and our bags into the lift but we could have gone separately so it wasn’t a big issue.
