Hotel Gertrudenhof Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Hotel Gertrudenhof on Hauptstraße, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place in what’s basically a suburb. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones that surprise you, and this little gem in Rodenkirchen actually grew on me pretty quickly.

The thing about staying here is that you’re getting the real Cologne experience without the tourist chaos. I mean, you’re still technically in the city – it’s all one big municipal area – but Rodenkirchen feels like this quiet riverside village that just happens to be connected to downtown by the S-Bahn. The hotel sits right on the main drag, which sounds potentially noisy, but honestly the street quiets down after evening rush hour. What I loved was being able to walk maybe three minutes to the Rhine promenade, especially in the early morning when the mist is still hanging over the water and you’ve got the whole path basically to yourself. The staff genuinely seemed to know their neighborhood too – the front desk guy (I think his name was Klaus?) steered me toward this incredible bakery two blocks over that I never would’ve found on my own.

The rooms are… well, they’re what you’d expect from a solid 3-star place. Clean, comfortable beds, decent shower pressure, and everything works like it should. Nothing fancy, but I actually appreciated that they didn’t try to be something they’re not. The breakfast spread was surprisingly good – fresh rolls from somewhere local, proper German cold cuts, and coffee that didn’t taste like it had been sitting around for hours. What really sold me though was the whole vibe of the place. It’s got that family-run feeling where people actually care about whether you’re having a decent stay. When the S-Bahn was delayed one morning (construction on the tracks, typical), the woman at reception just casually mentioned an alternative route and wrote down the bus numbers for me. That’s the kind of local knowledge you just don’t get at the big chain hotels downtown. Sure, you’re looking at about a 25-minute ride to get into the heart of Cologne, but that train runs pretty regularly and honestly? After a day of cathedral crowds and brewery tours, coming back to this quieter corner felt like a relief. Plus, if you’re planning to explore any of the Rhine Valley or hit up some of the smaller towns around Cologne, you’re actually positioned better here than if you were stuck in the city center dealing with all that traffic.

Reviews of Hotel Gertrudenhof

  • A very good stay in a beautiful suburb of Cologne, well connected with the city center. A traditional pension with an ad – Giacomo from Japan – April 28, 2025 (9/10)

Traditional and welcoming as the German pensions of my youth.

What could be improved: Some minor finishing in the rooms could be repaired, but it’s minor.

  • A lovely little gem! – Ga from Belgium – October 15, 2024 (8/10)

Friendly service, nice bed. Good breakfast, but the absolutely best coffee I had in ages!! My compliments.

The hotel is located in central Rodenkirchen, so it is an absolute gem. I personally loved the style of the hotel.

What could be improved: The rooms could do with an extra socket or two, but this is probably due to the age of the hotel.

  • Ok for an over night stay – Christine from Croatia – October 13, 2024 (8/10)

Clean comfortable room. Friendly staff Good breakfast

What could be improved: Abit difficult to find the hotel parking which was private but still had to pay €9 per extra. Bed was abit hard for me . No tea / coffee kettle in the room and no where to get a drink without going out to a pub or Restaurant . After 350 km drive a cup of coffee would have been nice.

  • Wonderful – Sandra from Germany – September 14, 2024 (9/10)

The staff was very friendly and helpful. It's a small cozy hotel

  • Good quality room, clean, simple with nice and helpful people. – Ruta from Latvia – September 7, 2024 (9/10)

  • Lovely family run hotel – Cathy from United Kingdom – June 27, 2024 (8/10)

It was near the tram, a lovely little suburb with facilities, and the motorway. There is parking available. The owners were very friendly and went out of their way to be helpful

  • Good – Brian from United Kingdom – June 25, 2024 (7/10)

    Staff very friendly and accommodating.

What could be improved: Just too far out of town. Took me 1 and a half hours to walk from centre of cologne. Trams were not running well due to a large influx of people.

  • Recommend to visit – Aleksei from Germany – November 5, 2023 (9/10)

Very nice room and staff. Good breakfast and comfortable location.

What could be improved: Second/additional bed wasn’t comfortable for sleeping.
