Hotel Fortune Overview
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hotel Fortune on Bremerhavenerstr – honestly, the Niehl district isn’t exactly where most tourists end up, and that’s actually part of what makes this place interesting. It’s this solid, no-nonsense 3-star spot that feels refreshingly real after you’ve been drowning in all the overly polished hotels closer to the Altstadt.
The thing about staying here is that you’re getting an authentic slice of Cologne that most visitors never see. Niehl is where actual Kölners live and work – there’s this great Turkish bakery just two blocks down that opens ridiculously early (perfect if you’re dealing with jet lag), and the S-Bahn connection at Niehl station gets you to the cathedral in about 15 minutes without the tourist markup on everything. The staff at Fortune seem genuinely surprised when international guests show up, which I mean, can be charming in its own way. They’re helpful enough, though don’t expect anyone to speak perfect English – but honestly, that forces you to dust off whatever German you remember from school.
The rooms are, well, exactly what you’d expect from a 7.7 rating – clean, functional, with that slightly dated but comfortable vibe that reminds you this isn’t trying to be boutique anything. The beds are actually pretty decent (I’m picky about mattresses), and the windows open properly, which is more than I can say for some fancier places. You’ll hear some street noise during the day since Bremerhavenerstr gets a fair amount of local traffic, but it quiets down by evening. What I really appreciated was the parking situation – there’s space, it’s not ridiculously expensive, and you don’t have to navigate those nightmare narrow streets in the old town with a rental car. The breakfast is basic Continental stuff, nothing that’ll blow your mind, but the coffee’s strong and there’s usually decent bread. I actually ended up chatting with a few German business travelers who were staying there for trade shows – apparently it’s a regular spot for people who need to be near the industrial area but don’t want to pay city center prices. If you’re the type who likes discovering neighborhoods that feel lived-in rather than polished for tourists, and you don’t mind being a short train ride from the main sights, Fortune delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense.

Cheap, easy to find, very clean and comfy
What could be improved: The shower had a small problem, it was water in the whole bathroom after l did a bathIt was just ok. No food, the vending machine only worked when the desk could open it. – Linda from United States – June 19, 2025 (7/10)
It was mostly close to the venue. 10€ uber ride to go 5 km!

The room was clean and comfortable, the staff were friendly, and the air conditioning kept the room cool even during hot day. The location is a bit far from the city center but on the plus side, there’s plenty of parking space, and the nearest tram station is less than 10 minutes away on foot.
There were a couple of weddings during our stay but once we closed the window, it was perfectly quiet inside the room.Perfect for short stay – Esen from United Kingdom – May 24, 2025 (8/10)
