Hotel Casa Colonia Overview

Honestly, I walked past Hotel Casa Colonia three times before I realized this was actually the place – it sits so naturally on Machabäerstraße that it feels more like stumbling onto a well-kept local secret than checking into a tourist hotel. The building has this understated charm that perfectly matches Altstadt-Nord’s vibe, you know? It’s not trying too hard, which I actually appreciated after seeing so many over-the-top places in other parts of Cologne.

What really struck me was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. When I mentioned wanting to grab dinner somewhere that wasn’t crawling with tourists, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic map – he walked me outside and pointed toward this little Turkish place two blocks down that, honestly, ended up being one of my favorite meals in Germany. That’s the kind of insider knowledge you get when you stay somewhere that’s woven into the actual fabric of the area rather than just planted there for visitors. The rooms themselves are what I’d call comfortably no-nonsense – clean lines, good lighting for actually reading, and beds that don’t make you miss home too much. I mean, it’s a 3-star place, so you’re not getting marble bathrooms or anything, but the shower had proper water pressure and the windows actually opened (which, trust me, matters more than you’d think in these old German buildings).

The location thing is sort of perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying in actual Cologne rather than tourist Cologne. You’re close enough to walk to the Dom – maybe fifteen minutes at a relaxed pace – but far enough away that you’re not dealing with crowds of people taking selfies right outside your window at 7 AM. There’s a decent bakery literally around the corner where locals grab their morning coffee, and the U-Bahn station is close enough that getting around the city is painless. I actually found myself hanging out in the small lobby area in the evenings because it had this lived-in feeling that made me want to linger rather than just rush through. The whole place just works in this effortless way that makes you understand why it’s got such solid ratings – it’s not flashy, but everything you need is there and done well.

After missing our ICE transfer we ended up in Cologne at the end of the evening. We were still able to book & check-in at the hotel.
The hotel itself is situated ~5 min walking distance (with luggage) from the central station.
The room was clean, modern and good looking. I used my own brought HDMI cable to watch an episode of 'The Office' on the TV which was a nice way to end our travel day.
The breakfast was very good. The lady taking care of breakfast was very helpful and attentive, also spoke good English.
The receptionist was also very helpful when we needed a printed version of our invoice and helped us fill in our reimbursement form for DB.

Also, the 'in advance check-in' system works very well!

  • Nicely located for a short stay in Cologne – Michael from United States – May 20, 2025 (8/10)

I really liked the location and the cleanliness of the room. The breakfast was also very good, and the staff serving breakfast was excellent.

What could be improved: I didn’t like the self check in approach. I had been driving and traveling prior to arriving and didn’t have a chance to read my emails. The check in required multiple steps from an email sent just before arrival. Perhaps they should warn guests ahead of time to expect an email with instructions for self-check in.

  • Wonderful – Daphne from United States – May 20, 2025 (9/10)

The location is excellent, the room was cozy, comfortable, and clean. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Would absolutely stay here again!!

Light, bright room with thoughtful design details and a fabulous power shower.
