Hotel Begardenhof Overview

You know what struck me first about Hotel Begardenhof? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in Rodenkirchen where you’d never expect to find a hotel, but that’s actually what makes it work so well. I mean, you’re still technically in Cologne, but it feels like you’ve escaped to some sleepy suburb where people actually know their neighbors. The building itself has this old-school German charm – nothing flashy, just solid and unpretentious in that way that makes you think it’s been here forever and will outlast us all. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too, no corporate script nonsense, just real people who seemed genuinely happy to see you arrive.

What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. You’re far enough from the main tourist chaos (honestly, the Altstadt can be a nightmare with all those bachelor parties), but the S-Bahn connection from Rodenkirchen station gets you into the city center in maybe 15 minutes when you want civilization again. The rooms are clean and comfortable in that no-nonsense way – think quality linens and decent water pressure rather than Instagram-worthy design features. There’s this lived-in feeling that I actually prefer over those sterile chain places where everything looks like it came from the same catalog. The breakfast room overlooks a little courtyard garden, and if you’re an early riser like me, you’ll have the place practically to yourself until the business travelers start filtering down around seven-thirty.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a place for everyone. If you need a concierge who speaks five languages or room service until midnight, look elsewhere. But if you want somewhere genuine to sleep well and start your day properly, somewhere that feels more like staying with distant relatives than checking into a corporate machine, then Begardenhof gets it right. The neighborhood has this authentic residential vibe with actual bakeries and corner shops where locals do their daily shopping, not tourist traps selling overpriced souvenirs. I found myself walking down to the Rhine most evenings – it’s maybe a ten-minute stroll – and the riverfront there is way more peaceful than the crowded stretches closer to the cathedral. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven in German cities will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The 8.2 rating makes perfect sense to me – it’s not trying to be something it isn’t, just doing the fundamentals really well.

Reviews of Hotel Begardenhof

  • Very Good – James from United Kingdom – June 11, 2025 (8/10)

Garage parking, room comfort, location and staff helpfulness were all good.

What could be improved: There was no restaurant available for evening meal, even though the booking.com listing states that there is. This is becoming our normal experience and it is frustrating. I am not sure whether to blame the hotel or booking.com but listings on the site should reflect the facilities offered by the hotel and they often don't.

  • Fair Cologne – R from Czech Republic – May 21, 2025 (8/10)

We checked in after 00:00 with a code for the key. The room we had was clean, nice and spacy. We even had a nice balcony.
The location was near to perfect for as we visited the fair. This was only a 15 minut drive.
The parking garage was roomy and we had enough free spots.
The garden is modern and nice. With nice weather you can have the breakfast in the garden.
The breakfast was good, not special, but suffiecient.
The staff is friendly and helpful

What could be improved: Because we were delayed on our trip we called for a late check inn. The reception promised us to send the info by mail and I should call back before 21:00 if nothing arrived. Nothing arrived, so I called at 20:55. Nobody answerred the phone. After 21:00 I was succesfull and had a fully stressed receptionist on the line who explained me all his troubles with guest and then assured me that I would get an entrance code. Luckily we did.
One of the lights in the room was flickering. Luckily we could switch it off individually. We announced this at the reception the next day for which they thanked.
The build in gauch was not really clean. It could use thourough cleaning.
At the breakfast some items were already missing at 9:00 'o clock. Like the scrambled eggs. More guests were looking for it. I presume they could have been ordered, But I expect especially this item to be refilled automatically.

  • Great! – Spela from Slovenia – March 14, 2025 (9/10)

Peaceful neighbourhood, very friendly and professional staff, great breakfast and spacious room, beautiful experience!! The only slightly negative thing would be the distance from the city center, although the neighbourhood is super peaceful!

Location very good if you want something slightly outside of central Cologne.

There was no shower gel or shampoo in bathroom
