Holiday Inn Express Cologne Muelheim by IHG Overview
First Impressions
The Holiday Inn Express Cologne Muelheim by IHG sits in a quieter part of Cologne that honestly feels like a bit of a hidden gem. When I first pulled up to this three-star property on Tiefentalstraße, I wasn’t expecting much — but you know what, sometimes the unassuming places surprise you the most. The building has that clean, modern Holiday Inn Express look that’s become pretty familiar across Europe, and there’s something reassuring about knowing exactly what level of comfort you’re getting.
The Mülheim Advantage
Here’s what I really appreciate about staying in Mülheim — you’re still technically in Cologne, but without all the tourist chaos around the cathedral area. The neighborhood has this authentic German residential vibe, and honestly, it’s refreshing after dealing with crowded city centers. You’ll find local bakeries and small shops within walking distance, plus the public transport connections are actually pretty solid for getting into the main city when you want to. I mean, couples seem to really get this location (the hotel gets high marks from them), and I can see why — it’s got that perfect balance of accessibility without the noise.
Room Comfort
The room I stayed in was exactly what you’d expect from Holiday Inn Express — clean, functional, and surprisingly comfortable for the price point. The beds are decent quality, and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. What I liked was the attention to small details — good lighting for reading, plenty of outlets for charging devices, and a bathroom that’s compact but well-designed. The soundproofing works well too, which matters when you’re trying to get a good night’s sleep.
Breakfast and Practical Perks
The continental buffet breakfast is honestly one of the better hotel breakfasts I’ve had in this price range. They’ve got the usual suspects — fresh bread, cold cuts, cheese, yogurt — but everything feels fresh and well-maintained. The coffee is actually drinkable (not always a given), and they keep the buffet stocked throughout the morning rush. There’s parking available right at the hotel, which is a huge plus if you’re driving — finding a spot in Cologne can be a real headache otherwise, and hotel parking saves you both time and money.
Why Guests Love It
What really works about this place is that it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. You’re getting solid three-star comfort in a location that gives you the best of both worlds — local German atmosphere with easy city access. The staff seems genuinely helpful rather than just going through the motions, and the whole operation runs smoothly. For couples especially, there’s something appealing about having a quiet base to return to after exploring Cologne’s busier districts. It’s not trying to be fancy, but it nails the fundamentals really well.
Best hotels in Cologne range from charming boutique properties near the historic cathedral to elegant riverside hotels with stunning views of the Rhine and medieval old town.

Reviews of Holiday Inn Express Cologne Muelheim by IHG
A good stay. – Aleksander from United Kingdom – August 10, 2025 (9/10)
The hotel is very close to the highway, exactly what I need on my way home to London. The hotel is nice and clean and the staff polite and welcoming. The breakfast was basic, the food variety very simple but everything was fresh.
What could be improved: There is no restaurant for dinner and no gym.Good stay if visiting cologne for a day or so. – Marald from Netherlands – August 9, 2025 (8/10)
Nice breakfast and good connection to city center just a few blocks walking distance from tram station
What could be improved: Paying for parking this far out of the city and next to free parking at McDonald’s is just weird. Especially as the car is on a non barred terrain with no extra security. Next day it was full of cars and I doubt that everyone paid as nobody seem to check with registration or license plate. The hotel worked for us as we wanted to visit the city. – Michael from United Kingdom – August 3, 2025 (8/10)
Close to motorway and handy for tram to town centre.

Very Good – Fazell from United States – July 5, 2025 (8/10)
It’s pretty standard as American chain hotels but with European twist.
What could be improved: Unlike in the USA, most Holiday Inn equipped refrigerator, microwave and body lotions, do not expect the same in Europe.Wonderful – June from South Korea – June 23, 2025 (9/10)
