When I first walked up to Peterstraße 11, I honestly wasn’t sure if I was in the right spot. The building doesn’t scream “hotel” at you, which is actually kind of refreshing in a city where every corner seems to have some flashy chain trying to catch your attention.

What you’re really getting here is more like staying in someone’s well-kept apartment than a traditional hotel experience, and I mean that in the best way possible. The whole setup feels genuinely local – you know how some places try so hard to feel “authentic” that they end up feeling fake? This isn’t that. You’ll wake up to the sounds of actual Cologne happening outside your windows, not some sanitized tourist bubble. The location is honestly pretty brilliant once you start exploring. You’re right in Altstadt-Süd, which means you can stumble to the cathedral in about ten minutes (seriously, I timed it), but you’re not dealing with the chaos of being directly on one of the main tourist drags. Heumarkt is basically around the corner if you need that old-town square fix, and the Rhine promenade is close enough for those evening walks that somehow always end up lasting way longer than you planned.

Here’s the thing though – don’t expect fancy lobby service or someone to carry your bags up. The whole operation runs more like a quality apartment rental, which keeps costs down but means you need to be a bit more self-sufficient. Check-in was smooth enough when I stayed, but it’s not a 24/7 front desk situation. The rooms themselves are actually quite decent for a 3-star place – clean, functional, with enough character that you don’t feel like you’re sleeping in a corporate box. I appreciated that the kitchenette situation actually worked (you’d be surprised how many places cheap out on the basics), so grabbing groceries at the Rewe down the street and making coffee that doesn’t taste like hotel lobby brew is totally doable. The 7.7 rating makes sense to me – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers on what it promises without any major disappointments. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this area, honestly, so if you’re driving, factor that into your plans. But if you’re doing Cologne the right way – walking, using the excellent public transport, maybe renting a bike – then you’re perfectly positioned to dig into what the city actually offers beyond the obvious tourist checklist.

  The apartment was perfect for our weekend in Cologne and wasn't too far from Neumarkt so easily accessible.
  The host was really responsive, gave clear instructions on how to access the apartment and sorted out a cot for us.
