You know what? Das Wiesenhaus is one of those places that completely throws you off when you first arrive – and I mean that in the best way possible. I was expecting some standard hotel situation in Cologne, but instead you’re pulling up to what feels like a little countryside retreat tucked away in Westhoven. The whole setup is actually pretty genius: they’ve got this café-camping-tiny house combo going on that somehow just works, even though it sounds a bit scattered on paper.

The tiny houses are honestly where it’s at here. I stayed in one for three nights and was genuinely surprised by how well thought out everything was – the bed was comfortable (not one of those rock-hard European mattresses you sometimes get), and there’s this clever little kitchenette situation if you want to make coffee without trekking to the main café. Speaking of which, the café part isn’t just some afterthought – they do proper breakfast and the coffee is actually decent, which matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to wake up and figure out your day. The whole vibe feels sort of like adult summer camp, if that makes sense, with people wandering between the tiny houses and camping areas. It gets a bit lively in the evenings, especially on weekends, but nothing too crazy – mostly just other travelers comparing notes about Cologne.

What I really appreciated was how easy it made getting into the city center. You’re technically outside the main tourist zone, which keeps things quieter and honestly more affordable, but the public transport connections are solid once you know the system. Takes about twenty minutes to get to the Dom or the main shopping areas, and there’s parking on-site which – trust me – is worth its weight in gold if you’re dealing with a rental car in Cologne. The staff runs pretty lean, so don’t expect round-the-clock service, but the check-in process was straightforward and they actually seemed to know their stuff about local recommendations. I mean, you’re not getting luxury hotel treatment here, but for a 3-star place with a 7.7 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises without any weird surprises or hidden fees that make you grumpy later.

  The cabin is situated in a lovely location not far from the city. Cabin fairly clean and comfortable.
  
  What could be improved: Initially getting into the site was a little difficult. You need to have know which named cabin you are staying in to access the key box along with a code. Unfortunately I hadn’t received the information before arrival. Once we had called the property we were given the code to get the keys for our ‘Country’ cabin. The cabin itself was fairly clean however, the shower tray was dirty and the shower head does not work properly. We also couldn’t get hot water to shower.

  Beautiful quiet location yet convenient for central cologne. Cosy space – perfect for 2. The café/restaurant was nice and the hosts very friendly accommodating and welcoming as were some of the other guests we met.
  
  What could be improved: no privacy inside the home or enough space if there would be more than 2 people (the house was set to sleep 4 but table and seating better suited to 2) Composting toilet filled quite quickly and required emptying most days which was fine once you figured out the 'knack' to opening it and where it needed to be disposed!!

  Nice to get some quiet out side of the city. Rebecca was excellent – she was very helpful and easy to contact anytime. She spoke good English and arranged our transfer to the station for us. Even phoned us after to make sure we had made it ok .
