CityPark Hotel Overview

You know what? CityPark Hotel isn’t going to win any design awards, but there’s something refreshingly honest about this place that I actually really appreciated. It sits right on Venloer Straße in Neustadt Nord, and honestly, that location is kind of perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying in actual Cologne rather than tourist bubble-land. The street itself has this great mix of Turkish bakeries, little cafes, and those wonderfully chaotic German corner shops that somehow sell everything from phone chargers to fresh flowers. I mean, you’re literally a ten-minute walk from the Dom, but you’re also surrounded by where people actually live and work, which I found way more interesting than being stuck near the main train station with all the other travelers.

The hotel itself is properly three-star – clean, functional, nothing fancy, but the staff actually seem to care about what they’re doing. Check-in was quick, and the woman at reception gave me these specific walking directions to the cathedral that avoided the construction mess on Ehrenstraße (which, if you’ve been to Cologne recently, you know is still a disaster). My room was on the third floor facing the courtyard, so it was pretty quiet – though you’ll definitely hear some street noise if you’re facing Venloer Straße directly. The beds are firm in that distinctly German way, and the bathroom was small but had decent water pressure, which honestly matters more than fancy toiletries. There’s this slightly retro vibe to the whole place, like it was renovated sometime in the early 2000s and they’ve just been maintaining it well ever since rather than chasing every design trend.

What really sold me on this place was how it fit into the neighborhood. There’s a fantastic döner place literally next door – I’m talking about the kind where locals line up at lunch, not the tourist traps. And if you walk five minutes toward Friesenplatz, you hit this stretch of bars and restaurants that feels completely authentic. The U-Bahn station is close enough to be convenient but far enough that you’re not dealing with constant foot traffic outside your window. Parking is typical city parking – a bit of a hunt, but there are spots if you’re patient. I stayed here in late September when things were just starting to cool down, and the area had this lovely evening energy with people walking their dogs and sitting outside the cafes. It’s the kind of place where you might actually want to come back to your room and open the windows rather than just crash and leave early the next morning.

  • Great place to stay in Cologne. Great location & very good value for money. – Amanda from United Kingdom – September 14, 2023 (7/10)

It’s in a great location. There’s a lovely park opposite. It’s a 1 minute walk to nearest metro station & right next to a supermarket. Our room had a small kitchen area which was very useful.

What could be improved: No air conditioning or a fan on the room. It was very hot when we were there.
