Look, I’ll be honest – when you first walk up to CityClass Hotel am Dom on Am Hof, it doesn’t scream “luxury boutique” or anything like that. It’s more like this solid, well-kept building that just happens to sit practically in the shadow of Cologne’s massive cathedral. But that’s actually what I ended up loving about it, you know? No pretense, just a really well-run place that gets the fundamentals right.

The location is honestly ridiculous in the best way possible. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Dom – you can see those Gothic spires from some of the upper floor windows, which is pretty surreal when you’re brushing your teeth in the morning. What’s even better is that Am Hof itself is this quieter street that runs parallel to all the tourist chaos, so you get the convenience without feeling like you’re sleeping above a souvenir shop. The breakfast room overlooks this little courtyard area, and there’s something really pleasant about starting your day there before diving into the Altstadt madness. Speaking of breakfast – it’s one of those German spreads that’ll keep you going until dinner if you’re not careful. Proper coffee too, not the watery stuff some hotels try to pass off.

The rooms are what I’d call “efficiently comfortable” – clean lines, good lighting, and honestly some of the most reliable WiFi I’ve had in a German hotel. The beds are firm (which seems to be a thing here), and the bathrooms are compact but smartly designed. You’re not getting a marble palace, but everything works exactly as it should. I stayed on the fourth floor and barely heard any street noise, even though we’re talking about central Cologne here. Check-in was smooth – the front desk staff actually knew the neighborhood well enough to give me specific restaurant recommendations beyond the usual tourist traps. They pointed me toward this little brauhaus on Frankenwerft that I never would’ve found otherwise. Parking can be tricky in this part of the city, but there’s a garage about a block away that the hotel can arrange, which saves you from circling the Altstadt looking for a spot. The whole area gets pretty lively during Karneval season, so if you’re visiting in February, just know you’re signing up for some good-natured chaos – but really, that’s half the fun of being in Cologne during that time.

  The location was great. Just a short walk from the train station around the other side of the cathedral. Lots of places to eat close by. We could see part of the cathedral from our room. Breakfast and staff were lovely too.
