City Apartments Cologne – Apartment 1 Overview
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Höninger Weg in Zollstock, I wasn’t sure what to expect from City Apartments Cologne. The neighborhood feels properly residential – you know, the kind of place where actual Cologne locals live their daily lives, not the touristy center everyone talks about. But that’s actually what I ended up loving about it.
The apartment itself sits on the third floor (and yes, you’ll be climbing those stairs – good to know if you’re hauling heavy luggage), but once you’re up there, it’s got this surprisingly spacious feel for what’s technically a 3-star place. The kitchen is actually functional, I mean really functional – not one of those token hotel kitchenettes where you can barely boil water. I ended up cooking a couple of meals because, well, the local Rewe is just a short walk away, and there’s something nice about starting your day with coffee you made yourself rather than hunting for an overpriced café. The living area has this lived-in comfort that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like you’re crashing at a friend’s place for the week.
What really works here is the location – and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” way everyone says. Zollstock connects you to the city center via the U-Bahn pretty seamlessly (the Zollstock station is maybe a 7-minute walk), but you’re far enough out that you can actually sleep at night without hearing drunk tourists stumbling down cobblestones. The tram lines here are reliable, and honestly, I found myself exploring parts of Cologne I never would have seen if I’d stayed in the Altstadt. There’s this great Turkish bakery around the corner that locals line up at every morning – that’s when you know you’ve found something good. The whole area has this authentic German residential vibe, complete with quiet Sunday mornings and the occasional sound of kids playing in nearby courtyards.
I’ll be straight with you though – the building itself isn’t going to win any architecture awards, and the WiFi can be a bit spotty in the bedroom (works fine in the living room). But the value here is solid, especially considering you’re getting a full apartment setup for what you’d pay for a cramped hotel room closer to the Dom. The check-in process was refreshingly straightforward – none of that overly formal hotel reception drama. Just practical, get-you-settled-in efficiency. If you’re the type of traveler who wants to experience Cologne like someone who actually lives there, rather than bouncing between tourist traps, this place makes a lot of sense. Plus, parking on the street is actually possible here, which anyone who’s driven in German city centers will appreciate.
