City Apartment Overview
You know what struck me first about City Apartment? The name is almost hilariously understated for what you actually get. I mean, sure, it’s technically an apartment-style place, but walking into this renovated building on Achterstraße feels more like staying at a friend’s really well-put-together flat than some generic hotel room. The street itself is one of those narrow Cologne lanes that locals use as shortcuts – you’re right in Altstadt-Süd, which honestly is the sweet spot if you want to feel like you’re actually living in the city rather than just visiting it.
The building has this understated charm that grows on you. Nothing flashy, but everything works exactly as it should, which – let’s be honest – isn’t always a given with apartment-style accommodations. The rooms have proper kitchenettes (not those sad little coffee stations), and the beds are actually comfortable, not just Instagram-worthy. What really won me over, though, was how quiet it gets at night. You’re close enough to hear the occasional tram rumbling by, but Achterstraße doesn’t get the weekend party crowd that some of the more touristy streets deal with. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving – this part of Cologne wasn’t exactly designed with cars in mind – but there’s usually street parking if you’re willing to walk a block or two.
The location is what really makes this place shine, and I don’t mean in that vague “convenient location” way travel sites always throw around. Walk five minutes toward Severinstraße and you’ll hit some of the best local spots in the neighborhood – cafes where they know your order by day three, bakeries that actually make their bread on-site. The Christmas market season transforms the whole area (though honestly, it gets pretty crowded), and summer evenings, you can walk down to the Rhine in about ten minutes. The 9.2 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve stayed here – it’s not trying to be luxury, but it nails everything it sets out to do. For a 3-star place, the attention to detail surprised me. Fresh flowers in the lobby, actually good coffee in the rooms, and check-in that doesn’t involve standing around for twenty minutes. If you’re the type who wants to explore Cologne like you live here rather than tick off tourist boxes, this is your spot.
Hotel in Cologne booking should be done early, especially during Carnival season when the city hosts one of Germany’s most famous cultural celebrations.

I thoroughly enjoyed staying here. The location was perfect, very central and i could enjoy the Südstadt vibe here. Everything is nearby. The host was nice and the bed was comfortable the bathroom was modern and clean. Kitchen well equipped. The host even provided welcome drinks, which was very sweet of her.
What could be improved: The noise isolation is not good. I was woken up by something dragging their suitcase down the stairs, and the garbage trucks beeping outside.
Opening the door was difficult – the key is barrel is wobbly so you must jiggle your keys in the barrel for a while to get the right fit to open the door. I would have preferred a more stable key barrel or another stabler access.
I didn't like the fake fur everywhere -on the floors, on the seats . i can imagine they wouldn't be washed but I'll doGood – Lavinia from Germany – December 16, 2024 (7/10)
Amazing, would happily stay again. – Rhiiannon from United Kingdom – December 9, 2024 (10/10)
