Buchholz Downtown Hotel Overview
You know what struck me first about the Buchholz Downtown Hotel? It’s tucked away on this narrow cobblestone street – Kunibertsgasse – that most tourists completely miss, even though they’re literally walking past some of Cologne’s oldest architecture. I mean, you’re in Altstadt-Nord here, so you’ve got that authentic medieval vibe without the circus of tourist traps that plague other parts of the old town.
The hotel itself is honestly what I’d call a solid workhorse. It’s a 3-star place that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, but the 8.1 rating makes total sense once you settle in. The rooms are clean and comfortable – not Instagram-worthy, but actually functional for real travelers who need to, you know, sleep and store their stuff. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, which is sort of miraculous considering you’re practically in the heart of everything. The thick walls of these old buildings work in your favor here. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – no lengthy presentations about spa packages or restaurant reservations, just friendly efficiency from staff who seem to genuinely know the neighborhood.
Location-wise, this is where the Buchholz really shines, though you might not realize it immediately. You’re a five-minute walk from the cathedral (and honestly, you can glimpse the spires from some of the upper floor windows), but more importantly, you’re right near Hohe Straße for shopping and surrounded by these little streets where locals actually eat and drink. There’s this fantastic brewhouse – Peters Brauhaus – literally around the corner that serves proper Halver Hahn, and you’ll find yourself stumbling onto Heumarkt square without even trying. The thing about staying here versus those bigger chain hotels near the train station is that you actually feel like you’re experiencing Cologne rather than just visiting it. Parking can be tricky – well, it’s the old town, so that’s expected – but there’s a public garage about three blocks away that won’t completely destroy your budget. I’d definitely recommend this place if you want something authentic and well-located without paying premium prices for marble lobbies you’ll never use.

Reviews of Buchholz Downtown Hotel
Wonderful – Ruth from United Kingdom – June 3, 2025 (9/10)
Convenient location near Hauptbahnhof and Dom and Rhine, beautifully quiet, looking out on a leafy green courtyard at the back with a view of St Kunibert's church. Great room. We had asked for two separate beds for two of us (sisters) and were given a lovely suite/family room with a double bed and sofa bed. Good breakfast. Helpful staff.
What could be improved: The only thing missing was tea/coffee in the room.Wonderful – Karen from United States – May 9, 2025 (9/10)
Very walkable yet quiet
What could be improved: Nothing!Very Good – Milan from Luxembourg – December 25, 2024 (8/10)
Friendly staff and proximity to Christmas market
What could be improved: Too cold – even with radiator set to 5 (max), it was a bit cold in the room.Charming little hotel – Yetty from Indonesia – December 20, 2024 (9/10)
Breakfast is superb, staff are friendly and helpful. Location is easy to find , nearby the Central station and we walked through the lovely river side from hotel to Cologne Christmas market.
What could be improved: Bathroom is really small, especially for the shower cubicle.Wonderful – Usanee from Belgium – December 12, 2024 (9/10)
Clean, nicely decorated for the holidays, friendly staff, early check in, 5 min walk to the cathedral.
What could be improved: Stayed on the first floor (located next to a restroom and towel closet) so was woken up earlier than expected by the noise.Enjoyable and will stay there again. – Cheryl from United Kingdom – November 21, 2024 (8/10)
Convenient location so a quick walk to the Cathedral and Main Station. Clean and spacious room. Friendly staff. Nice breakfast.
What could be improved: Not the prettiest of locations but convenient.A very good Hotel, excellently located and very convenient for the Messe. Reasonably priced too. – Scott from Romania – November 14, 2024 (9/10)
The Hotel is in a great location just minutes walk from the central railway station. The staff were both very friendly and extremely accomodating (allowing me to leave my luggage at reception for later collection, after I had checked out, so that I wouldn't be forced to drag it to the exhibition centre). Breakfast was great with a varied selection of cold meats, cheeses, youghurts, fruits & cereals. The room was spotlessly clean and the bed comfortable. Considering the location the price was also very reasonable.
What could be improved: The only problem I encountered was that the internet was extremely slow but I think that might be a feature of german data infrastructure rather than the fault of the Hotel. I live in a country with lightning fast internet so that also might have coloured my perception.Comfortabel homely and friendly accomodation in good location – Els from Netherlands – November 9, 2024 (9/10)
Very comfortable cozy clean accomodation with very friendly staff at all hours. It’s just 10 minute walk from central station and the Ludwig museum
Good breakfast . I had a spacious room with nice facilities and good bedVery pleasant, helpful staff and well located. – Prudence from Australia – October 26, 2024 (9/10)
The hotel was well located near a very good restaurant and coffee shop and 6 minute walk to the station. The service was excellent. The staff prepared breakfast a little earlier than the scheduled times as I had to leave early
What could be improved: The single room was tiny but otherwise comfortableWe recommend Buchholz Hotel – Klatt from United States – October 23, 2024 (9/10)
Breakfast was delicious. Great location.
