Black Hotels Köln Overview
So I’ll be honest – when I first rolled up to Black Hotels Köln on Vogelsanger Straße, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The building has this sleek, modern vibe that stands out against the more traditional Ehrenfeld architecture, but in a good way, you know? It’s actually perfectly positioned if you want to experience Cologne beyond the touristy cathedral crowds. Ehrenfeld is where the locals hang out, and you’re literally surrounded by some of the city’s best independent cafés and record shops.
The thing that struck me most was how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between design-forward and actually comfortable. The lobby feels more like a friend’s really well-decorated apartment than a hotel – there’s this warm lighting that makes everything look better after a long day of wandering around the city. Check-in was refreshingly quick (the staff actually seemed happy to be there), and I mean, parking can be a bit of a hunt in this neighborhood, but honestly that’s just Cologne for you. The rooms themselves have this minimalist thing going on without feeling sterile – good blackout curtains too, which you’ll appreciate since Vogelsanger can get a bit lively on weekend nights.
What really won me over was the location’s personality. You’re a quick tram ride from the Hauptbahnhof, but you’re also walking distance to Venloer Straße where the real food scene is happening. I’d grab coffee at one of the Turkish spots in the morning, then wander back through the quieter residential streets – it felt like I was staying in an actual neighborhood rather than a hotel district. The 8.1 rating makes total sense to me; it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything works exactly as it should. The Wi-Fi is solid (always a concern when you’re trying to upload those Rhein sunset photos), and the beds are firm enough that you’re not sinking into some marshmallow situation. If you’re the type who wants to experience Cologne like someone who actually lives here rather than just hitting the major sights, this spot gets it right.

Amazing hotel with the friendliest staff you’ll ever get! They helped us with our questions and were super helpful!
I will definitely stay in this hotel again!
Some little things like a tv remote that broke or some stains on the curtains but nothing that bothered us too much.
If you find yourself needing a beautiful hotel for a good price, do consider this!
Also definitely get the breakfast! It was amazing! (I attached a photo!)Wonderful – Sylvia from Netherlands – December 15, 2024 (9/10)
Upon arrival we were told that the room wasn't ready yet and it was going to take another two hours after which we were offered a discount as well as free drinks and breakfast the following morning. Once we got back from our stroll in the center, the room still wasn't ready after which we were offered more free drinks and they were very apologetic and accommodating. The room itself is very spacious and clean, the bed is extremely comfortable and the rain shower is just amazing. All in all they were the absolute nicest offering us free drinks, breakfast, parking and a discount only because the room took a few extra hours to prepare. Thank you for everything!

Location and facilities such as the bath and shower were excellent. Close to the stadium in Cologne and very cool decor.
What could be improved: Floor was next to car park and windows thin, unfortunately we could hear noise throughout the night.Very Good – Debora from Belgium – May 10, 2024 (8/10)
