Sometimes that’s exactly what you want. I mean, if you’re spending your days exploring the Dom or wandering around the Altstadt, you just need a decent bed and a good shower, right? The staff actually knows the neighborhood, which was refreshing – they pointed me toward this little bakery just down the street that I never would’ve found otherwise. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven in Cologne will tell you is basically a miracle. The building’s got that practical German efficiency thing going on, and while it’s not Instagram-worthy, there’s something reassuring about staying somewhere that just… works.

Here’s the thing about Merkenich that most people don’t realize – you’re actually perfectly positioned if you want to explore beyond the typical tourist stuff. The tram connections are solid (though you’ll want to grab a day pass), and honestly, coming back to this quieter part of town after a day of crowds was kind of nice. It gets genuinely peaceful in the evenings, which is rare for any hotel near a major city. The 7.4 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to blow your mind, but it delivers on what it promises. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I was doing a longer trip and wanted to actually live somewhere instead of just crashing between sightseeing sessions. Plus, you’re saving money compared to those downtown hotels, and the extra cash is way better spent on actually experiencing the city.

  Spaceous place and well equiped. Beds and sofa are comfy. All kitchenware available. Location next to supermarkets and reétaurants. About 10min walk from metro station. Quiet and secure at night. Kind host who let us stayed longer than check out time.

  Apartment is as advertised, plenty of space in all rooms and a very nice/clean shower. All kitchen facilities worked for us with cupboards stacked with plates,bowls etc. Beds were quite soft take that as a positive or negative. We were all very happy with the space available and having a sitting room area.
  
  What could be improved: Location is a bit out from cologne central but can easily get the number 12 U-Bahn into centre. Some parts in the apartment seemed slightly dated and maybe could’ve been cleaned more thoroughly but did not bother us. TV also did not work and could only get Wi-Fi out of the two bedrooms.

  It is worth the money. Cheap but comfy. Easy access and clean. And nearby the center. The person who called to check us before check in is really nice.
  
  What could be improved: Only thing I can complain is at 10:30am the cleaners/caretakers/owner rang the door 3x for different reasons. The last one is that we have to check out already as the new costumers called and they need to clean the rooms already. Check out is at 11am. So we have to rush and leave. We even check in around 11pm night before but of course it is not their issue. But for me 11am checkout is 11am.

  Lodging was right along the Rhine River bike path, close to grocery and bakery. Nice to have kitchenette. Beds were comfortable. Quiet.
  
  What could be improved: Property described as having 2 bathrooms in unit B….only 1. Even though smoking is prohibited, kitchen smelled of stale smoke. Livingroom is a bit dark. No A/C but cooled off eventually with open windows and fans. Could not find the listed hair dryer, but one was brought to me quickly. Kitchenware was not very clean. A bit expensive for what you get compared to other lodging so far along Rhine.
