Look, I’ll be honest with you – when I first heard “Basement Apartment” on Weißenburgstraße, I wasn’t exactly picturing luxury. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked into Neustadt Nord, which honestly is one of those neighborhoods that locals love but tourists somehow miss. You’re literally a ten-minute walk from the Rhine, and I mean the good part where you can actually sit by the water without dodging tour groups.

The apartment itself has this cozy, almost secret hideaway vibe that grows on you. Sure, it’s below ground level – they’re not trying to fool anyone with the name – but the windows are positioned just right so you don’t feel like you’re living in a cave. The space is thoughtfully designed, and whoever set this up actually understands what travelers need. There’s proper counter space in the kitchen (you know how rare that is), and the shower has decent water pressure, which… well, if you’ve stayed in enough European apartments, you’ll appreciate that detail. The neighborhood gets quiet at night too, except for the occasional tram on Neusser Straße, but honestly the sound becomes kind of soothing after a day or two.

What really makes this spot work is the location – you’re in this perfect sweet spot where you can walk to the old town if you want the tourist stuff, but you’re also right in the thick of where actual Cologne happens. There’s this fantastic Turkish bakery just around the corner on Neusser that opens early, and if you head toward Ebertplatz (I know, I know, it has a reputation, but during the day it’s fine), you’ll hit some genuinely good restaurants that aren’t charging tourist prices. The U-Bahn connection is solid too – Ebertplatz station gets you anywhere you need to go, though honestly I found myself walking most places because the neighborhood’s just pleasant to wander through. It’s got that 4-star rating for a reason, and while a 7.2 might not sound earth-shattering, it reflects what this place actually is: reliable, comfortable, and smartly located without trying to be something it’s not.

  We had a great stay at the apartment: the kitchen was well equipped and clean, bedroom was clean but it had a bit of a strange small and the bathroom was ok.

  The hosts were very helpful and allowed us to check in early and check out very late.
  The place had enough furniture, a fully equipped kitchen, a clean bathroom, and all of them were very sufficient. The kitchen had everything you could need to make tea and coffee, a microwave oven, etc. Even water was left for us to drink.
  
  What could be improved: The only thing I didn't like about this place was that it was far from public transportation. You need to walk at least 10 minutes to the nearest train station. If you want to walk to Dom Square, it will take at least 20-25 minutes.

  Gute Ausstattung, also alles da, was man braucht. Zentrale Lage, Altstadt fußläufig zu erreichen.
  
  What could be improved: Es riecht etwas muffig nach feuchtem Keller, aber das ist ob der Lage im Keller wohl schwer zu umgehen.
