Astor & Aparthotel Overview
You know what struck me first about the Astor & Aparthotel? It’s got this understated confidence sitting right there on Friesenwall – not trying too hard to impress, but clearly comfortable in its own skin. The building itself has that solid German efficiency thing going on, which honestly works in its favor. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the cathedral (Dom), but tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the constant tourist chaos that comes with being right in the thick of things.
The aparthotel concept here actually makes sense – they’ve got regular hotel rooms plus these apartment-style setups with little kitchenettes, which is perfect if you’re staying more than a couple nights or just want the option to grab groceries from the Rewe down the street instead of eating out every meal. The staff knows their stuff about the neighborhood too, which you don’t always get. They pointed me toward this little bakery on Ehrenstraße that I never would’ve found otherwise, and gave me the real scoop on which U-Bahn lines to avoid during rush hour. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re not going to win any design awards, but everything works properly, the beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in German hotels, if we’re being honest), and the bathrooms have decent water pressure. I noticed they’ve been updating things gradually – some floors feel more refreshed than others, so you might get lucky.
What really sells this place for me is the location specifics that aren’t obvious from just looking at a map. You’re in Altstadt-Nord, which sounds super touristy but is actually where a lot of locals still live and work. There’s this great café called Peters Brauhaus just around the corner where you can get proper Kölsch without the tourist markup, and you’re close enough to the Heumarkt that you can easily walk to the good restaurants but far enough that you won’t hear the weekend party crowds. The 7.6 rating feels about right – it’s solidly good without being fancy, and honestly, that’s exactly what you want when you’re exploring Cologne. You’ll spend your money on the museums and beer halls instead of overpriced hotel amenities you’ll never use anyway.
Cologne’s hotels showcase the perfect blend of German tradition and modern comfort, with many featuring brewery tour services and traditional Rhineland hospitality.

What could be improved: It would be nice, if instructions for wifi weren´t in TV, but in booklet.Excellent location, comfortable beds – Chloë from Belgium – March 13, 2024 (9/10)
Very good location, city centre is only a short walk away or one or two tram stops. Trams and buses stop nearby, plenty of cafés, restaurants and shops around. Beds were comfortable and room (business double room) was spacious as well. Shower was a bit on the smaller side, but still comfortable enough to shower in. Very friendly staff, always welcoming you with a smile! Loved the haribo sweets as a nice little surprise on the bed
What could be improved: Bathroom is slightly on the smaller side, but still big enough to be comfortable. Duvets were a bit thin tooSmall bedroom but def okay for one night – Salsd from France – March 1, 2024 (7/10)
Location
Many restaurants and bars nearby
Probably 20mn walk away from the main station
Nice shower
No noise from outside
What could be improved: Small bedroom for the price (and it was cheaper than the comments I read during peak season…) but I guess Koln is not cheap for hotels..
