You know what really caught me off guard about this place? The moment you step inside, it doesn’t feel like you’re staying in some sterile apartment rental – it actually feels like someone’s thoughtfully designed home that they just happen to let travelers crash in. I mean, Genter Straße isn’t the flashiest address you’ll find in Cologne, but honestly, that’s part of what makes this spot work so well.

The location is one of those “locals know” kind of situations. You’re right in Neustadt Nord, which – if you’ve spent any time in Cologne – you’ll recognize as that sweet spot where the city feels alive without being touristy. There’s this great little bakery literally around the corner where you can grab proper German bread for breakfast (and trust me, after a few days of hotel continental breakfast, you’ll appreciate this). The tram connections are actually solid too, though I found myself walking to the Altstadt more often than I expected because the route takes you through some really charming side streets. Takes maybe 15 minutes on foot, and you get to see how people actually live here.

What really sets this apartment apart – and probably explains that crazy 9.7 rating – is the attention to details that most places completely miss. The kitchen is actually equipped for cooking, not just reheating takeout. There’s proper lighting for reading (you’d be amazed how many places get this wrong), and the Wi-Fi doesn’t mysteriously cut out every time someone in the building uses their microwave. The building itself is quiet, even on weekends when the neighborhood gets a bit livelier. I was there during Carnival season, which is… well, it’s intense in Cologne, and I could still sleep without earplugs.

The check-in process was refreshingly straightforward – none of that awkward waiting around in a lobby hoping your room is ready. And here’s something I really appreciated: they actually provide local recommendations that aren’t just the obvious tourist traps. Someone told me about this tiny wine bar on Eigelstein that I never would have found otherwise, and it ended up being one of those perfect “only in Cologne” experiences.

If I’m being completely honest, the only minor thing is that the shower pressure could be stronger, but that’s pretty standard for older German buildings, and the hot water situation is reliable. The space itself feels bigger than most hotel rooms you’d get for the same price, and there’s something refreshing about having your own little corner of the city rather than being surrounded by other tourists at breakfast.

Look, Cologne isn’t the easiest city to figure out accommodation-wise – the areas near the cathedral are expensive and crowded, while some of the outer neighborhoods leave you feeling disconnected. This place hits that perfect middle ground where you’re genuinely in the city but not overwhelmed by it. Plus, at four stars with that rating, it’s clearly not just me who thinks they’ve got something special going on here.

  Wunderschöne, kleine aber saubere Wohnung in guter Lage. Besonders gut hat uns gefallen, dass die Wohnung mit allem ausgestattet war, was man für einen komfortablen Aufenthalt braucht oder sogar mehr (Kaffee, Tee, Öl, Küchenhandtücher). Unsere Erwartungen wurden übertroffen. Sehr zu empfehlen!

  Unkomplizierter Kontakt, netter Host, der sehr gut erreichbar ist. Unkomplizierte Schlüßelübergabe. Super nett, dass ich das Auto noch bis zur Abreise am Nachmittag stehen lassen konnte! Alles prima!
  
  What could be improved: Etwas klarere Kommunikation bezüglich Abreisezeiten. Ich war zu spät mit der Schlüßelübergabe, ohne es zu wissen. Da der Parkplatz an den Schlüßel gekoppelt ist. Dennoch alles gut geklärt.
