Apartments am Rheingarten Overview
You know what struck me first about Apartments am Rheingarten? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – it really does feel like you’re staying in someone’s well-appointed apartment rather than a typical hotel room. I mean, when you walk into these units, there’s this immediate sense of “oh, I could actually live here for a while” that you don’t get at most places in Cologne’s old town.
The location on Am Bollwerk is honestly pretty sweet – you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Rhine promenade, which locals just call the Rheinboulevard, and you can actually hear the gentle hum of river traffic if you crack your windows at night (in a good way, not like city noise). What I really appreciated was how close you are to the historic center without being right in the thick of the tourist chaos around the cathedral. You can walk to all the main sights easily, but when you come back in the evening, you’re in this quieter pocket of Altstadt-Nord where actual residents live. The apartments themselves feel surprisingly spacious for Germany – I had a proper kitchen setup, not just a mini-fridge and microwave situation, which saved me a fortune since eating out in Cologne every meal gets expensive fast.
Honestly, the 8.3 rating feels about right to me. The place has that solid, well-maintained feel without trying too hard to be fancy. My apartment had these large windows that actually opened properly (you’d be surprised how many German hotels have those tiny tilt windows that barely let air in), and the bathroom was modern without being sterile. What really won me over was the little touches – good coffee maker, decent WiFi that actually worked throughout the space, and this small balcony where I could sit with morning coffee and watch people heading to work along the cobblestone streets below. The check-in process was refreshingly straightforward too, though I’d recommend confirming arrival times since it’s not a 24-hour front desk situation like the big chain hotels.
One thing to keep in mind – parking in this part of the old town is, well, let’s just say it’s typically German city center complicated, but there are public garages within walking distance if you’re driving. I actually ended up loving the forced walking though, because you discover these little side streets and local bakeries that you’d totally miss if you were staying out by the airport or in some business district. The whole Altstadt-Nord area has this lived-in authenticity that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like you’re just temporarily borrowing someone’s neighborhood life.
The luxury concierge service in Cologne offers personalized access to private art collections, Michelin-starred dining, and VIP cultural experiences in this historic German city.

Reviews of Apartments am Rheingarten
Very Good – Ro from Netherlands – July 27, 2025 (8/10)
Location is absolutely wonderful. Within walking distance of all major sights, city center etc.. Both appartements were great. Clean, spacious, AC, coffee and tea facilities and ours both had wonderful Rhine view.
What could be improved: As the saying goes" don't judge a book by it's cover". The interieur of the building itself (hallways, elevator etc) look pretty run down but once you get into the room, it's wonderful. Would book these appartments again without hesitation!Value king – Moritz from Germany – July 3, 2025 (9/10)
Location was perfect, staff was very nice, price was very good. Most important – the climate control worked perfectly and was already turned on way before we got to the room – essential on a 38 degree heat day
What could be improved: For the price and type of stay, nothing to really say here. It was not the classiest or most feature-rich room, but that isn't to be expected.Very Good – P from United Kingdom – June 28, 2025 (8/10)
Nice comfortable one room apartment overlooking the river and close to the old town and main railway stations.
Wonderful – David from New Zealand – June 19, 2025 (9/10)
Excellent location, beds, air con, desk.
What could be improved: Would have been an excellent kitchenette if there had been a microwave, crockery, cutlery, and tea towels.Very Good – Sabrina from Switzerland – June 5, 2025 (8/10)
Top Lage, easy Check in.
Very comfy stay with a wonderful view overlooking the Rhine – Harris-deans from United Kingdom – June 3, 2025 (9/10)
Excellent location with a lovely view. Lovely staff who were friendly & helpful. Nice size fridge & comfy bed. Good size room with excellent shower & heated rail.
What could be improved: The air conditioning ’gurgled’ periodically which was a little frustrating throughout the night, & there were no cooking pots (although there was an electric hob).Wonderful – Victoria from Australia – May 28, 2025 (9/10)
Wonderful location with a great views, near many restaurants and fabulous river park location.

Great location. 10 minutes from the train station and close to the river with lots of restaurants around. 10 minutes from the Lindt Chocolate Factory also.
Wonderful – Alison from United Kingdom – March 24, 2025 (9/10)
Great studio for our 2 day stay. Room simply furnished but spacious and clean and very comfortable bed. Fridge and kettle useful. Good location, few minutes walk from station, Dom and old town with lots of restaurants.
What could be improved: Bathroom quite small but fine for couple of nights.
