You know what struck me first about Apartment Köln Ensen? It’s actually in a real neighborhood – not some touristy bubble downtown, but an honest-to-goodness residential area where you’ll hear kids playing in the courtyard and smell someone’s dinner cooking next door. Oberstraße 21 sits in this quiet pocket of Ensen that honestly feels more like staying at a friend’s place than checking into a hotel. I mean, you’re still technically in Cologne, but it’s got this almost small-town vibe that grows on you pretty quickly.

The apartment itself surprised me – and I’ve stayed in plenty of these converted residential buildings across Germany. The folks running this place actually seem to care about the details that matter. The kitchen wasn’t just some token kitchenette with a broken coffee maker (you know the type), but properly equipped with decent pots and a refrigerator that actually keeps things cold. I ended up cooking a few meals because, honestly, after walking around the neighborhood, I discovered this little Turkish grocery store about two streets over that had the most incredible fresh produce. The wifi held up fine for work calls, which isn’t always a given in these older buildings, and the shower had proper water pressure – trust me, these things matter when you’re staying somewhere for more than just a night or two.

What really won me over was how quiet it gets at night. You’re far enough from the main Cologne hustle that you can actually sleep with the windows open, but the public transport connections aren’t terrible if you want to head into the city center. I usually walked to the S-Bahn station in the mornings – takes about twelve minutes at a normal pace, maybe fifteen if you stop for coffee at that little café near the pharmacy. The whole area has this lived-in feeling that I actually preferred to staying right in the thick of things downtown. Plus, parking was straightforward, which anyone who’s tried to park in central Cologne will appreciate. The 8.9 rating makes sense once you spend a few days there – it’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but it works really well for what it is. I’d definitely book it again, especially if I was planning to spend more time exploring this part of the city rather than just using Cologne as a base for day trips.
