Look, I’ll be straight with you about Apartment Airport – it’s one of those places that doesn’t try to be fancy, but somehow gets the basics so right that you end up really appreciating it. The name pretty much tells you everything: it’s apartment-style accommodation near Cologne’s airport, tucked away on Waldstraße in Urbach where most tourists never venture.

What struck me first was how quiet it actually is, despite being airport-adjacent. I mean, you’re definitely going to hear planes if you’re a light sleeper, but it’s not that constant roar you’d expect. The apartments themselves feel lived-in rather than sterile – and I say that in the best way possible. There’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that feels like an actual home rather than another cookie-cutter hotel room. The kitchenettes are properly equipped too, which honestly saved me a fortune during my week there. You know what’s great about this area? There’s a decent bakery just down the street (locals line up there every morning), and if you walk about ten minutes toward the S-Bahn station, you’ll find a proper German grocery store that’s open later than you’d think.

The staff here actually seem to care – not in that over-the-top hospitality way, but more like they genuinely want you to have a good stay. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and when I mentioned I had an early flight, they made sure I knew exactly which S-Bahn connections would get me there fastest. Speaking of transport, that’s really where this place shines. The S19 line gets you into Cologne’s city center in about 20 minutes, and honestly, staying out here means you skip all the tourist crowds while still having easy access to the cathedral, the museums, all that good stuff. Plus, if you’re flying out of Cologne Bonn Airport, you literally cannot beat the location – it’s maybe a 15-minute ride on public transport, or a very reasonable taxi fare if you’re loaded down with luggage. The neighborhood itself is pretty typical suburban German – not Instagram-worthy, but real and functional. There’s something oddly comforting about hearing normal life happening around you instead of being stuck in some touristy bubble. Sure, the building looks a bit dated from the outside, and the WiFi can be temperamental during peak hours, but for the price point and that 7.8 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises. If you’re the type who needs a pool and room service, look elsewhere. But if you want a clean, practical base with good transport links and the chance to live like a local for a few days, this place hits the sweet spot.

  What could be improved: It is in a very good location and the owner was very friendly and attentive. That being said, that's all it has going for it. For the price you're only really paying for the convenience of being fairly close to the airport but the amenities were below average, no shower gel, no shampoo, no toothpaste nor coffee/tea sachets available and the heating system wasn't really amazing.

  Cosy studio in a brilliant location with easy acces to busses and other transport, short walk to local supermarkets and cafés. Handy if you were flying as it is located near to the airport.

  What could be improved: It was not really a downer for us, but the sockets were not really toddler proof. You have to be very watchful of electric sockets if yiu are travelling with little persosn.
