Apartment 9 at Cologne Cathedral Overview
You know what? When I first saw “Apartment 9 at Cologne Cathedral” on my booking confirmation, I honestly thought it was just marketing fluff – like, how close could it actually be? Well, turns out they weren’t kidding around. This place sits right on Eigelstein, which means you’re literally a three-minute walk from those massive Gothic spires. I mean, you can hear the cathedral bells from your window, which sounds romantic until you realize they chime every hour (including at night, though honestly, you get used to it pretty quickly).
The apartment itself feels more like staying at a friend’s place than a typical hotel – and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s got that lived-in comfort that makes you want to kick off your shoes and actually relax instead of perching on the edge of everything like you’re in some sterile chain hotel. The kitchen is surprisingly well-stocked for a 3-star place; I actually made coffee there most mornings instead of hunting down overpriced café lattes. The owner clearly knows what travelers need – there’s a proper shower with decent water pressure (honestly, this matters more than people admit), and the Wi-Fi actually works throughout the entire space, not just in one random corner.
What really sold me on this place though was the neighborhood vibe. Eigelstein runs right through Altstadt-Nord, which locals will tell you is where you want to be if you’re trying to avoid the tourist madness but still stay walkable to everything. There’s this fantastic Turkish bakery about two blocks down that opens ridiculously early – perfect for grabbing something before the cathedral gets swarmed with tour groups. And here’s something most visitors don’t realize: if you walk north instead of south when you leave the apartment, you hit the Rhine in about eight minutes, where there’s this whole riverside path that’s basically empty in the early mornings.
The only minor thing (and honestly, this is pretty typical for older German buildings) is that the stairs are narrow and a bit steep, so if you’re hauling massive suitcases, just… pack lighter or be prepared for a little workout. Also, parking around here is sort of a nightmare during weekdays – there’s street parking, but it fills up fast with commuters heading into the city center. That said, Cologne’s public transport is actually solid, and you’re close enough to walk pretty much everywhere that matters anyway. The whole setup just works, you know? It’s got that sweet spot of being comfortable without trying too hard, central without being chaotic, and reasonably priced for what you get in a city where hotel rooms near major attractions usually cost a fortune.
Exploring Cologne offers visitors an unforgettable journey through Germany’s cultural heart, from its magnificent Gothic cathedral to its vibrant arts scene and traditional beer culture.

What could be improved: Die Umgebung war bis in den Morgenstunden sehr laut. Clean bathroom and bed linen, central location, shampoo and shower gel were provided.
What could be improved: The apartment was run-down, with the floors in the rooms in terrible condition. The toilet door didn’t lock, and the handle was half broken. There were someone else’s groceries left in the fridge. For the additional sleeping spaces on the sofa, no bed linen had been prepared — the chest with linens only had duvet covers and not a single sheet. The kitchen was unusable for cooking: there was only one huge pot and a tiny frying pan that was in such poor condition, it should have been thrown away years ago. Wi-Fi details were not provided at check-in — we had to ask for them separately.
