So I stayed at this place called Apartelliment in Cologne’s Ossendorf district, and honestly? It’s one of those spots that surprises you in the best way. The name threw me off at first – “smart übernachten” basically means “smart sleeping” which sounds a bit corporate, but the reality is way more down-to-earth than that suggests.

The thing about Rochusstraße is that it’s properly residential, you know? Like, you’re staying where actual Cologne people live, not in some tourist bubble. There’s a little Turkish bakery about two blocks down that does incredible börek in the mornings, and the whole area has this lived-in feeling that I actually prefer to being right in the Altstadt where everything’s geared toward visitors. You can walk to the S-Bahn station in maybe eight minutes – I timed it because I’m weird like that – and then you’re in the city center in fifteen minutes tops. But here’s what nobody tells you: the evening commuter rush actually works in your favor because the trains run more frequently.

What really got me about this place was how they’ve thought through the small stuff. The rooms have this sort of minimalist-but-warm vibe, with proper blackout curtains (thank god) and these little touches like hooks actually placed where you’d want to hang things. I mean, you know how hotel rooms usually have hooks in completely random spots? Not here. The kitchenette setup is legit too – not just a mini-fridge and a sad coffee maker, but actual space to prep food if you want to hit up the Rewe down the street. Speaking of which, there’s decent grocery shopping within walking distance, which honestly saved me probably fifty euros over four days.

The staff genuinely seem to care about getting things right, which you can’t always count on with smaller places. Check-in was smooth even though I showed up way earlier than I should have – they stored my bags without making me feel like I was inconveniencing them. And when my room’s heating got a bit enthusiastic on the second night, they sorted it out within an hour. It’s that kind of efficiency that makes you want to come back.

One thing to know: Ossendorf isn’t exactly nightlife central, so if you’re planning to stumble home from bars at 3 AM, you might want to factor in taxi costs. But if you’re more interested in having a proper base for exploring Cologne without paying city-center prices, this hits the sweet spot. The area’s quiet enough that you’ll actually sleep well, but connected enough that you’re not stuck out in suburbia. Plus that 8.6 rating isn’t just numbers – you can feel it in how everything runs smoothly without any fuss or drama.

  Great kitchen, which we did not use, however. Good location, for our needs. Wonderful, luxurious apt, completely and beautifully furnished and supplied. Everything was functional. Friendly hostess. One of the nicest places we have ever stayed in. I mean that.

  What could be improved: As we were there for 5 nights, I was a bit concerned we may not have enough toilet paper 😅 I would have just bought some! 😅 Plus as we were there for 5 nights it would have been nice to have an additional towel each – although there was a washing machine I wasn't confident that they would dry.

  Spacious modern apartment in a quiet area. Spotlessly clean with comfortable bed and high tech facilities including well equipped kitchen and bathroom. Located a minute walk from a tram stop taking around 20 min to Cologne centre station and cathedral. Only 10 minutes ride to Neptunebad.
