Akazienhof Hotel & Brauhaus Overview
You know what caught me off guard about the Akazienhof? Walking up to this place on Akazienweg, I was expecting some sterile chain hotel, but it’s actually got this really authentic German brewery vibe that feels like someone’s been running it with genuine care for years. The whole building has this warm, traditional feel – not the fake rustic stuff you see everywhere, but the kind of worn-in charm that comes from locals actually hanging out here regularly. And honestly, they do – the brauhaus side gets pretty lively with Cologne folks, especially on weekends, which I mean, tells you something about the beer quality.
The location in Grengel is one of those things that sounds inconvenient until you realize how smart it actually is. Yeah, you’re not stumbling distance from the cathedral or the main shopping streets, but the S-Bahn connection is ridiculously easy – literally a few minutes walk to Porz-Wahn station and then you’re in the city center in about 20 minutes. Plus, and this is key if you’re driving, parking here is actually manageable and free, which… good luck finding that anywhere closer to downtown Cologne. The neighborhood itself is quiet enough that you’ll sleep well (the rooms facing away from the main road are dead silent), but there’s enough going on that you don’t feel stuck in the middle of nowhere.
What really works about this place is how it splits the difference between being a proper hotel and feeling like a neighborhood spot. The rooms are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but the beds are solid and the bathrooms are recently updated. I actually appreciated that they didn’t try to go all modern and sleek; it feels consistent with the whole brewery atmosphere downstairs. Speaking of which, the restaurant is legitimately good – like, locals-bring-their-families-for-Sunday-dinner good. The schnitzel is massive, the beer is fresh (obviously), and the service has that efficient German friendliness where they remember your order by the second night. Check-in was smooth, staff speaks solid English, and they’re pretty helpful with transit tips if you ask. The 8.2 rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be luxury, but it nails what it’s going for. If you want to experience a bit of real German brewery culture without paying city-center prices, and you don’t mind a short train ride to get to the tourist stuff, this place delivers exactly what you’d hope for.
The concierge service in Cologne can arrange exclusive cathedral tours, secure reservations at traditional brauhouses, and organize Rhine River cruises and museum visits.

I had a perfect nights sleep! Clean, comfortable bed in a good sized room. Breakfast was high quality with reasonable selection. Staff friendly.
Hot and powerful shower. Location was quiet
What could be improved: It was an easy walk to the airport but on a Sunday there didn't seem to be a bus straight to the airport between 7am and 1pm despite the stop being right next to the hotel (according to Google maps). You can walk 15 mins to the next stop though – not a problem for me but might be if you have heavy luggage.Great place, definitely recommended – Junia from Ireland – August 28, 2024 (9/10)
Overall I loved the hotel. Nice large rooms, friendly staff and breakfast was really nice. Bus to the airport is right outside so very handy for my next day flight.
What could be improved: Only thing I didn't like was that they have no elevator. But staff helped me carry up my bag and were very friendly.Value for money – James from United Kingdom – July 18, 2024 (8/10)

What could be improved: –Akazienhof. – Lokidog from United Kingdom – May 12, 2024 (7/10)
The Hotel was nicely placed for the motorway and easy to locate and had parking. Handily, there was also a petrol station opposite with fuel at a reasonable price.
The staff were very helpful and friendly.
The room was light and airy with a comfortable large bed and all you needed for a stay overnight. As that is all we did, I cannot comment as to longer stays.
'Continental' breakfast was excellent with a good choice and splendid coffee.
Dinner was enjoyable if a little limited in mains options.
Overall, I would recommend the Hotel.
What could be improved: The shower head wouldn't stay in position in its wall mount over the bath, either swinging round or falling out and had to be hand held.
As there was only a small glass screen, despite best efforts water sprayed out over the floor. A small thing perhaps but very irritating.
